34 years old myself (birthday was yesterday). Only really started Japanese 18 months ago with RTK.

The Encouragement Thread - Dakoina - 2009-02-09

Good luck ryuusei86! I started learning Japanese several times myself, but this AJATT way keeps me sticking to it. Although progress is stagnating for me, I still do reviews and make up stories for Kanji to come. When I finally find a spot (after reviewing and getting through my huge failed list Sad but it's getting smaller again Smile yeay for me), I learn some new Kanji.

Meanwhile I'm looking for some J-tv and J-dramas episodes. Although i don't understand a word mostly of the time, It's fun to watch or just listen. luckily some episodes are fan subbed! These things keeps my going, because I really want to understand what they say.

Anyway, my goal is to learn spanish and perhaps Chinese after I become fluent in japanese.

126 - my retention rate of my first pending review was 50% but i was admitedly 2 days overdue with the review. not giving up - actually the submitted stories rule, make much more sense than heisigs

Aha, I recognize your user name from the TJP forum. I've posted only a few times there though, as "Jack W." Happy birthday, and I'm almost seven years your senior. Wink

I'm already beginning to see how this works once one learns kanji (at least their meaning and writing), and then goes back to learn Japanese for real. Looking over some song lyrics I'd copied into an MS Word document, I had a number of "aha moments," which I am guessing become only more frequent with more kanji under one's belt.

And I know what you mean, chillko -- though actually the stories I make up are ones I tend to remember the best, even though the ones I make up usually aren't half as good as the ones I read from others. Or half as filthy. Naughty kids! Smile

This seems like a good place to make a first post.

Just starting 300. I feel I could easily have done more since I started in early Jan '09, but that's not important. I just have to concentrate on moving forward and read a few AJATT articles occasionally to motivate myself when I'm feeling a bit 'off'. I will see you at 500 or so!

The Encouragement Thread - Dakoina - 2009-02-10

It's better not to rush it too much Smile I also have the feeling I could've done more, but in my case it gave me some huge review piles and failed cards. Slowly but steady is also good.

That's me you're seeing in your rear view mirror, I just cleared up through 299. What a lousy number for a lesson to end on, feels like #300 is jumping up and down and laughing at me for not having met it yet. Smile

And yet I'm going to heed this advice and not rush it too much. After all, that first "review pile" is bound to show up tomorrow or the next day. Rolleyes

Ah, I will be officially 伯父さん in two months as I turn ムロ and fall off my youth pedestal. Or maybe it is the pedestal台 that fell? If a former red-neck raised in Arkansas can do it, anyone can!

Be sure to fire your shotgun off into the air in celebration!

I was away on business this past week and didn't look at the site. I'm afraid to log in.

If there's any truth at all in anime (which is more than a little unlikely), one goes from "niisan" to "ojisan" at about 27. Small comfort, I know. However, you did have me going on "muro" for longer than it should have been. Smile

I'm rooting for you, musigny -- today's review pile, only my second ever, had well over 100 cards in it, and I can easily imagine several hundred landing on certain days in the review pile of someone more advanced than I am. Guess there's nothing to do but break it up into reasonable sessions, even if it takes a few days just to clear the review stack.

I'm still back at 354, and looked ahead (bad idea) to see some of these big whopping lessons coming up, including the one with some 130 kanji in it. I've calculated that if I now add 24 kanji per day for 28 days, I'll finish lessons 16-27 and be done with those looming huge chapters. That should put me over 500 by the middle of next week, and over 1000 at the end of this run, in the second week of March.

At that point, I leave town myself for several days, but will hopefully have internet access most of that time.

The Encouragement Thread - Rakooga - 2009-02-23

I started a few days back and hit 120 today. I am in no rush and have set myself a minimum of 10 per day. It has been a rewarding process so far, especially considering that I didn't even know what "the kanji" were 6 days ago Big Grin

I restarted at 300...>.<;
I forgot to study everyday and no it's beginning to hurt. I wonder if I will ever break 300. I am allready having issues stuffing 300 in my 脳. :C

It continues to feel very full from now on but it just never seems to top off. You get used to the "drowning in kanji/ cramming them in" sensation after a while; so just keep stuffing them in, getting used to them, and then watching in amazement as they become easy to remember!

The Encouragement Thread - gyuujuice - 2009-02-28

Thanks a lot~! I am allready used to the load other than the parade characters. >.> But I think I will have them down in an hour or so. Big Grin

Just working through the very long lesson 18. I feel like this lesson is where things have started to get difficult for me, but I am going to keep working away on it! Great website, glad I found it.

The Encouragement Thread - thelooseteeth - 2009-03-10

Just reached 1176 today. Been pounding these lessons in with a quickness as of late. I look forward to studying and adding more kanji each day. Especially since I've started to notice a major difference in my understanding of Japanese with each new kanji I digest.

My reviews have gone down to 85% as opposed to the usual 95-100%, but that's to be expected since I've turned up the intake.

Good luck everyone, and keep going! It gets easier as you go on.

I just tested myself on lesson 18 yesterday. I managed to have 89% recognition. Considering the rapid pace at which I went through it, I was impressed with myself.

Although after that, I learned the ones for Lesson 19, and quizzed myself today--It was terrible! Something like 50-60%, which I am not satisfied with.

So instead of learning the 6 for tomorrow, I changed up some stories that I had.

I've read some hints on making your own stories...although I've found the ones already uploaded are very handy.

Many of us have gotten stuck, but found a way through it. I zoomed up to 500, then stalled for 4 months. Had almost my entire deck expired. Now I am at 800, feeling 1000 just around the corner. Just keep hacking away at it.

The Encouragement Thread - welldone101 - 2009-03-11

I've been stalled around 950 for weeks. Every week I'll add like one lesson and peter out. Hopefully once I break that halfway mark things will start being more consistent. Sad

The Encouragement Thread - Harrow - 2009-03-12

My experience was that hitting the halfway point was a huge boost re motivation. And the second half seems easier than the first, somehow -- partly because I've gotten into a routine and also because I have a better sense of what works for me as far as stories and images go. You are almost there, welldone101!

The Encouragement Thread - akitadan - 2009-03-14

I just started lesson 19 today and I feel like things are starting to click again. I had been writing each one out about 15 times but now I've cut back to five times each. That seems more appropriate now that my brain has kind of adjusted to writing them and remembering them, etc. This site is really helpful too.

The Encouragement Thread - Robatsu - 2009-03-16

"Demolition" seems to have my number at the moment and refuses to stick, that and recently I met good old "Pegasus". Damn you Heisig, I will defeat you with mah lazor! I've just had to do a monster review of 159 and got 130 correct so I guess I'm getting the knack of it, but now I'm exhausted and about to mop up the failed batch. (Serves me right for adding 70 new cards and then leaving the deck for 2 days).

- Onwards.

OMGoodnessGracious. Lesson 52. I think lesson 52 is as far as I've ever gotten on anything! I can feel the end luring me in...

The Encouragement Thread - sethg - 2009-04-22

I'm on lesson 29... half way through... and I'm just finding it REALLY hard to focus now. I suddenly have no drive whatsoever. 2042 seems like forever away. Did any of your guys get this at the half-way point? I'm so anxious to finish, but it feels like I anticipated half-way for so long that now that I'm here... I'm, like, done. I don't want to continue.

:: sigh :: maybe it's just that the end of the school year is hear and I have so many finals to study for.
