JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - Tobberoth - 2008-11-26 alantin Wrote:Certificate of, say level one, would be a fine paper to add to your CV though..Can't be sure, but from what I heard JLPT is only acknowledged in Japan, putting it on your CV for a western company isn't as useful as putting university credentials (which is bullshit, most Japanese college majors never become good enough to pass JLPT1). JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - Jarvik7 - 2008-11-26 If the job was something where you had to use Japanese it would probably useful even in the west. Other than that I think the HR person would probably not even know what the test is, or that 1 is the highest level and not the first level. JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - shneen - 2008-11-26 They do know about it and use it in the States. When I was job hunting my last semester of college, most anyone I talked to for a job that required Japanese asked me if I had taken the test and what level I held. There are recruiting companies that deal specifically with jobs that are for Japanese firms/require the use of Japanese, and they definitely use it and like to see it on your resume. Outside of that, then no, they probably don't know what it is. But I've been asked to explain it in that situation as well... so it doesn't hurt to have it

Level 3 and 4 really aren't worth it, but I can understand why people would want to take them. I tend to work harder when I've paid for something and have a defined goal. Taking previous year's tests can give you a sense of accomplishment, but there is nothing quite like holding the paper in your hand that says, "I know this much Japanese." My studying is not going well, but I will probably pass. I'm starting to feel the urgency to study for the test, and that's when I tend to do my best studying. My practice scores are kind of dreadful though, and I need to improve them a bit before next week. Mostly, vocabulary and specific grammar is a huge issue. My reading comprehension is actually very strong, but that doesn't matter if I sometimes can't tell what a question is asking or what the answers mean. So, I'm hunkering down with my Unicom drill books and reading through them over and over again. Sounds like I'm in about the same boat as you are. Work as been too busy and my motivation has been too low to care... so studying hasn't quite been effective. I don't think I'll pass though ![]() Momentarily thought about skipping out on the test this time around... then kyoto-sensei offered to take me and a few other teachers out for dinner if I did. Oh, if only the passing percentage for 1kyuu was the same as the other levels....... I'd be singing a different song. And yeah - nothing quite like getting that certificate back in the end... despite what people say about it being a waste of time/money. It's a pretty good motivator. JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - kumadondon - 2008-11-27 Anyone testing at Tokyo Keizai Daigaku (東京経済大学) ? I'll see you there! I'm taking 2kyu JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - kfmfe04 - 2008-11-27 俺の二級は大岡山の東京工業大学だ。 JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - kfmfe04 - 2008-11-28 Is scrap paper allowed on the JLPT? <Edit> -------------------------- I guess an easier question is, are we allowed to scribble in the test booklet itself? --------------------------------- I don't really need it except sometimes, for the listening section, it helps to take notes... JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - kfmfe04 - 2008-11-28 Thanks, Katsuo. I just took the 2006 2kyu: let's just say it wasn't a pretty sight... Looks like I will have to depend on Listening and Vocabulary to pull up my Grammar and Reading Comprehension scores. I'd much rather get the similar scores across the board (at least 60% in each), but with a week to go, I'd be happy just to pass this thing. Cramming in some Reading and Listening now. JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - erlog - 2008-11-30 I just took the 2005 test as a practice test, and it points out pretty specifically where I need to spend my time for the next week. Vocab: 76/100 Reading/Grammar: 88/200 Listening: 52/100 Overall 54% score. I need that extra 6 percent which amounts to about 25 points between all the sections. If I can practice reading and listening I should be able to do that without too many problems. The grammar section is what's killing me, and a large piece of that is because the reading takes so long to get through. My problems it seems like is one area, my vocabulary level is a little bit low. This impairs my understanding of the sentences and the answers in the grammar portion. This also hinders my performance in the later sections of the actual vocab section. Has anyone else been in this same situation the week before and passed alright? JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - kfmfe04 - 2008-11-30 I just tried 2005 too (very similar pattern to yours): Vocab: 82/100 Reading/Grammar: 117/200 (58%) 8^( Listening: 67/100 Overall: 67% I, too, plan on practicing more listening and grammar over the next few days, as I'm a little out of ideas on how to improve on reading. erlog Wrote:Has anyone else been in this same situation the week before and passed alright?Hmm... ...I don't think any answers to that question can help either of us at this point. Both our scores are too low - it would be safer to get 70% or higher on the practice tests. Due to the variance in the test from year to year, the only way to pass it safely is to practice/study more and avoid making careless mistakes on the test. I also need to guess more quickly on unknown grammar/reading questions. -----Edit------ Just found this site for old tests: http://jlpt.biz/jlpt/jlptexamine.do?year=2007&level=2 changing the year and level seems to work fine --------------- JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - johnzep - 2008-11-30 I took an old test a couple days ago...I think it was 2002...for JLPT 2. I got a 70%, which I thought was ok for a first full practice test. Between now an the test I'm going to try to do a lot more practice tests. I think I can make up more points at this point by getting more familiar with the test format/quirks than learning a week worth of Japanese. In particular, I need to budget my time a little better on the reading/grammar section and getting used to the listening test. JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - captal - 2008-11-30 kfmfe04 Wrote:-----Edit------Fantastic! Now where are the answers... Any other links to practice tests? 6 days to go, so time to start cramming it all in ![]() I've finished the unicom 3級 book and gone through all the grammar points several times but I feel like I still don't have it down (and besides, I'm doing miserably on their practice tests). I'm awful at choosing the correct particle... hmm this one sounds like が... or を? Maybe は. Definitely に... #@(*! JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - Jarvik7 - 2008-11-30 I wish I could be studying for JLPT right now :/ Gotta finish this graduate level research paper on Japanese writing systems first. Will only have 3 days to cram before I take the test.
JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - erlog - 2008-11-30 I find that http://www.51gzw.com has the best test papers up. They're all in html rather than PDF so they're not fuzzy looking like some other PDF's I've used. Ostensibly they also have links to mp3s for the listening. If those links don't work, this orkut group has links to 4shared for the listening. http://www.orkut.com.br/Main#Community.aspx?cmm=54056729 JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - Jarvik7 - 2008-11-30 erlog Wrote:I find that http://www.51gzw.com has the best test papers up. JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - erlog - 2008-11-30 They had everything for all the tests I looked at. If you go to the bottom of a test page you'll notice there are little numbered links. Those are links to the different areas of the test. JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - Jarvik7 - 2008-11-30 erlog Wrote:They had everything for all the tests I looked at. JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - kfmfe04 - 2008-11-30 Sites here were all mentioned by erlog: ----------------------------------------------------------- http://www.51gzw.com/ is an excellent site. There are colored sections at the bottom: Blue: 日语能力测试 真题完整版 (tests) Orange: 日语能力测试 真题答案 (answers) Pink: 日语能力测试 听力原文 (transcripts) Purple: 日语能力测试 听力MP3下载(请使用迅雷下载)(mp3) For JLPT2, I was able to find everything, but unfortunately, it looks like the ftp server that holds the MP3's is down: http://ftp.58.218.177.231 A ping to that address doesn't even work (they either turned off ping or it's totally unaccessible). ----------------------------------------------------------- The Brazilian orkut site, also mentioned by erlog, has individual scanned tests for JLPT2 and .wma files for JLPT2 (.rar), but you must sign up for orkut (free), and the tests have been scanned instead. ----------------------------------------------------------- Thanks a bunch, erlog! JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - Jarvik7 - 2008-11-30 That's the same site. Either I'm blind or people are mistaking the listening transcript for the reading section. JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - captal - 2008-12-02 A lot of the links for the 3級 are broken... specifically the answers. Was anyone able to get them? I was able to take the 2006 test (minus the listening). 2000-2005 has no answers available (the pictures are broken). 1999 has the answers. Also- can the listening section have more than one answer (since you have to mark correct and incorrect answers?) I haven't done a practice listening test yet. JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - annabel398 - 2008-12-02 I'm nowhere near ready to take any level of JLPT, but just wanted to say to all of you who are--good luck and do your best! You are an inspiration to us beginners. JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - Aerin - 2008-12-04 I'm taking 1級 at Georgetown and expecting major fail. I barely passed 2級 last year and despite my early aspirations I haven't seriously studied since spring. But anyways, good luck to everyone! Also, thanks for the links! JLPT 2008 Sign-Up Thread - kfmfe04 - 2008-12-05 There is a 40min gap between Section 1 and Section 2. Also, there is an hour gap between Section 2 and Section 3. Can you eat/drink/take a leak during these breaks? |
