FNN News - phauna - 2008-05-27

I like watching the FNN News streaming video, as each segment is individually divided from the others so they are short, and they have a transcript in English and in Japanese.

However, the Japanese within the Flash window of the screen is all gobbledygook, and looks like it's using the wrong coding so I can't read it. However, all the rest of the page, the normal HTML is rendered correctly. I know how to change encoding for a page, but how do you change it inside the Flash object itself? I'm using Firefox. Any help would be immeasurably appreciated.

I get the crazy letters and the error as well. The video works for me when I use windows media player though.

Update your Flash player to the latest version-- a new version just came out.

I have no problems at all with the site, renders just fine in Flash, and I'm accessing with a US PC from a US IP address.

If that doesn't do the trick, you might want to make sure you've enabled JP code tables for non-Unicode Programs. In Win7, go to Control Panel: Region & Language: Admin Tab: Languages for Non-Unicode Programs: Change System Locale and then select Japanese, then reboot.

THEN reinstall Flash.

That might make it work. That's how I run my system, and it seems to work just fine in Firefox.

When I try to watch the news on FNN, I get messages telling me I'm out of region and that I can't watch, but the error messages only show up arbitrarily, and not for each video. Sometimes I can watch almost every segment, but other times I can only watch one or two. The fact that it's so unpredictable is annoying, so I've switched to TBS. Smile

FNN News is one of the best learning resources available. I think a person could become fluent reading the transcripts out loud with the aid of Rikaichan, and watching the clips as their only study technique. Though, it would be a boring path for many people who aren't interested in such things. If news is an interest for you, it is a gold mine.

I'm doing that for something else, there a jp person playing FF8(youtube play-through) and he reads out everything. I've been noticing I have no trouble reading along with him. If I applied this to everything else(i.e. shadowing for news). Man my reading, listening, speech would definitely get a huge boost up. So expect improvement if you keep this up!
