402 - (distant) and 455(delicious) - roderik - 2008-05-29
Why I am having troubles with these two particular kanji:
402 (distant) - It is easy enough to imagine one with a scarf wrapped around itself. However, my mind apparently finds it simply too hard to imagine one on the road.
455 (delicious) - I have never had a hot fudge sundae, and as far as I know they aren't commonly sold in the Netherlands either. Apart from that I'm afraid to admit that I'm not an avid reader of comic books, and therefore do not have a strong mental image in my head of a 'galacticus' eating suns with giant spoons
.Any alternative stories on these two particular kanji would be greatly appreciated. (It is perhaps a bit much to ask for help on stories two days in a row, but then again, the stories people shared with me yesterday were so good and of so much help that it is hard to resist myself not to ask for help again.

You can get hot fudge things at the burger king btw
I used
"Delicious things are things you could eat, with a *spoon* all *day* long!"
For distant I used the first story available but maybe something like this could work...?
If you see people on the road, stuffing dirt/soil in someone's mouth before wrapping a scarf around him to keep the soil inside (probably to make him choke or something?
No idea) you want to be distant from it. Ok, that was random x_X

With combinations like the lidded crock and scarf, a common trick is to find one good story in one of the related kanji and use the main character of that story for the others.
In this case I'll borrow billyclyde's story for monkey, (curious George finding a lidded crock and scarf and getting into trouble with a pack of wild dogs) and substitute lidded crock and scarf for curious George in the stories for distant and park.
As in: Well, somehow he got on the road and put a fine distance between him and the (no longer visible) pack. Next (or at the start of the story) he's in a wildlife park, (a pent-in park). What new adventures await him?
And if you don't know about the monkey curious George, check out the kid's section in your town library. It's translated to hundreds of languages.

For delicious, I split it into spoon and wagging tongue in mouth. So some chubby person thinks ice cream (or whatever) is so delicious that his tongue starts slurping away like something that a cartoon character might do. (Think Tom and Jerry or this: http://www.badj.it/image-files/thing/64/slurping.jpg ) Spoon in one hand.
For distant, if the road is the problem then give it a more concrete image. I imagine a long and straight highway that disappears into the horizon. With the lidded crock and scarf right in the distance.
Do you have the book?

The distant character will show up again in "park", and "monkey", both times minus the road, so it helps to have something that you can use again later. I used the idea of the distant stranger on the road that heisig suggests.. The character is "pent in" in the "park" character later on, so I have the stranger as a pervert who goes to jail after molesting a kid in the park. Use whatever sticks in your brin best, just make sure it's a good enough image that you can use it again later. Ganbatte! o/

You could also replace the "Lidded crock with a scarf around it" with a garden gnome, that went far away down the *road* to #distant# lands. He got pent-up in a park, and chased by a pack of wild dogs and monkeys. Or something like that.

402, distant, 遠. The gnome is on the road. He's not so far away, but because he is small he looks to be very distant.
403, monkey, 猿. The gnome joins the pack of wild dogs to lead them in battle against their natural enemies -- the monkeys.
585, park, 園. You or I could easily step over its low decorative border, but because he is so small, the gnome is pent in the park.
(Edit: As for the gnome himself, the poor little fellah gets dirt kicked up in his mouth every time anyone walks by, but at least some kind soul has tied a scarf round his neck to keep him warm.)
