RTK3 2nd edition keywords - abaddon - 2008-05-10

Fuaburisu. Would it be possible to add the changed keywords in RTK3 2nd edition? I think there is a thread on it in the RTK2/3 forum. As CharleyGarrett indicated there, the changes are:
1st edition 2nd edition
2263 interpretation - collect
2265 dedicate - devote
2416 elude - shirk
2419 remote - faraway

It would make the reviewing process a little bit less confusing sometimes..Wink

What a coincidence. Just yesterday I ran through my newly purchased copy of this book to verify any changes. I updated the Substitute keywords script, so if you want them fast, download the new version. Here's my list. Red lines are considered errata; the script will replace those with the corrected form regardless of the chosen edition.

Note the altered kanji for 2965.

Thanks for the extensive list Woelpad! I may be mistaken, but am I correct that the Substitute keyword script requires 'Greasekit', which requires Safari/Firefox? I'm working with IE7, so I think I'll wait for a possible update within the RvtK website itself.

Half correct. It requires Firefox and Greasemonkey. From what I hear, it doesn't work in Greasekit on Safari (nor Opera for that matter).

Not yet. But I'll collect the errata that I find as I come across them while working my way through the book (which would be finished hopefully end of june).

Regarding spelling, 2844 was corrected in 2nd Ed., 2940 not. I've added those to my list, both in my first post and in the script.

Also off-topic, but here goes: Frame 2301 (widespread) displays the wrong kanji in 2nd edition, asuming that the water, fingerprint primitives are correct. Instead of fingerprint, sign of the snake is shown.

Confirmed. 汜 is such a rare kanji it doesn't even appear in edict. Kanji Networks gives it as distributary (branch descendent of a river), or shore, pool (endpoints of said distributary). The kanji for widespread is 氾. Added to my overview.

I've also added a few other things I noticed while reading through the comments in the book. See the lines for pg 5 (intro), 2602 and 2837.

Overview updated. You'll be pleased to hear that most of the spelling errors have been corrected. Corrected in 2nd ed.: 2426, 2748, 2810, 2969 and bone (Index VI).

I also added that nonplussed changed to visit since 4th ed. for 2291, as I assume that they use the latest edition for RtK1 at time of print. The page numbers in Index VI for RtK1 primitives seem to corroborate that; see the bone example which is probably a page number for the 5th ed (if anyone can confirm that: p. 228).

Missing kanji for 2964 added.

Scriptwise, I've upgraded 2264, 2327, 2712 and 2844 to errata status, which means the script will replace them with their corrected form regardless of edition.

RTK3 2nd edition keywords - woelpad - 2008-06-15

As a result of our efforts here there's now an errata list for RtK3 available at the nanzan website. Heisig sounded extremely grateful and is thinking of prosecuting his own proofreaders as we speak (joke).

I've updated Reply #9 to reflect the corrections published in the pdf file. Noteworthy (and added to Reply #2) are the keyword change for 2848 ("drag" becomes "tow"), and the kanji and keyword change for 2965 ("bridle's bit" (轡) becomes "tinkling bell" (鑾)). Especially the altered kanji will pose a few headaches for programmers and websites. I'm myself wondering on how best to incorporate this into the Substitute script. I could wait of course to see how Fabrice will tackle this.

I noticed a few mistakes in the corrections themselves, which I will report to Heisig. I would ask to wait for these to be rectified before adding new ones.

Abaddon makes good on his promise. I saw you pass me by two third of the way through. Adding during the weekend must have given you an edge. Not a lot of competition otherwise. RtK3 is still not too popular.

Abaddon, what do you intend to say with 2836? The keyword in the frame is 'black kite', otherwise no one would know about the change, right?

I can ask Heisig about 2390. Katsuo took it for granted in 2929 and it even has its own group (2698, 2699), so perhaps there's a note somewhere in some RtK1 edition about this primitive.

woelpad: You're right. I think I wrote down 2836 since in RtK we use the 'kite falcon' keyword instead of 'black kite'. It doesn't have do to with the book itself, more with changing this keyword in RtK.

Another advise we could add is making a primitive for the 'generation / tree' combo, for example 'Tarzan' as proposed in the story of frame 2926 by Katsuo.

Yeah, I want to finish RTK3 as quickly as possible and get to the more important part of ...reading. Still, I'll be very happy when it will be finished. The review burden is quite large (also from RTK1) and I don't always have time to review each day, so the expired stack grows to be huge. Also, going on holidays doesn't help...Smile

I see you're nearly finished also, only 1/3 of RTK3 left. Must already feel like going down hill. It did for me though...

"Net" isn't explained anywhere in my editions of Heisig (RTK1 Ed. 3, RTK3 Ed. 1).

However, あみがしら (net) is used in Japanese for the horizontal "eye" radical. I prefer to use "net" because it is pictographic, good for story-building, and stops confusion with 目.

"Net" is named as a primitive in numbers 2390, 2539, 2698, 2699 and 2856.
Perhaps the first time it is used, 2390, a note could be added. Also, "net" is not in the index of RTK3 1st Edition. I haven't seen the 2nd Ed.

Reported errata added to my overview. I simplified the color scheme, using basically only 3 colors: Blue for errata corrected in the 2nd edition, green for those corrected in the corrections to the 2nd ed., red for uncorrected errata. The list does not contain new errata present in the corrections, as I hope those will be resolved swiftly.

Once again, most of the spelling mistakes were corrected in the 2nd ed. So yes, the proofreaders had something to show for their money.

Katsuo, nice remark about the status of Pluto as a planet. I added "dwarf planet" to the alternatives as that is another classification cited in the wikipedia article.

Not sure what you mean with 2330, 淀. 2nd ed. has it as water...determine, which looks correct; the leg kanji/primitive (足) doesn't come into play. Wrong primitives in 1st ed.?

The Plutoid classification is cutting-edge info. As of the IAU conference last week (11th June 2008), Pluto is now officially a "plutoid" (which is a sub-category of "dwarf planet"). BBC News article; Wikipedia: Plutoid. Whether that term will catch on with the general public, I don't know (as a Monty Python fan, I prefer to call it an Ex-planet).
