All About Particles (Kodansha Book) - phauna - 2008-08-31

I've done NO NI.

All About Particles (Kodansha Book) - atreya - 2008-08-31

If phauna has done NO, then I will move on to O. I was half-way done with NO though, but doesn't matter now...

All About Particles (Kodansha Book) - alyks - 2008-08-31

No, Phauna did NO NI, not NO.

Nukemarine Wrote:The full title of this book is "All About Particles - A Handbook of Japanese Function Words"

http://www.amazon.com/All-About-Particles-Kodanshas-Childrens/dp/4770027818/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1209729960&sr=8-1

It lists about 70 Japanese particles detailing about 200 functional uses. Each functional use gives two sample sentences on average. That means you have about 640 sample sentences covering you basic Japanese particle needs.
Y'all may know this already, but 14 years later, the same author wrote a book called "How to tell the difference between Japanese particles". From what I've read, it was meant to be a vastly improved version of the old book. By that I mean it wasn't written as a follow-up, but as a replacement.

IMO, both books cover the basic particles and their usage. However, the new one is better organized and easier to follow. In addition, as the title suggests, the new one does a pretty good job teaching how to tell the difference between particles. It really helped me figure out when to use which particle. There is a small quiz at the end of each section, which is also very helpful.

For these reasons, I would recommend the new book over the old book.

You might want to not post your email address on a forum, spambots will get it. Just privately message it to whoever. Just edit your post and delete the address.

NO DE - aovora
MONO DE - aovora
KEREDOMO - aovora
TOKORO DE - aovora
DE - Shakkun

Are you guys going to do them? Or should we just do them without you?

All About Particles (Kodansha Book) - AdamLeliel - 2008-09-20

Crap, I've been so wrapped up with starting college I haven't had a chance. I'm going to say I won't be able to do any for now, so.

All About Particles (Kodansha Book) - shakkun - 2008-09-21

Ahh wow, I totally forgot about this! Essay storm and everything. NI and DE are up on the spreadsheet now. Sorry guys, pretty embarrassing. :[

I won't be able to do any others for a while though, probably until after semester.

All About Particles (Kodansha Book) - vosmiura - 2008-09-21

After this I'm interested in working on The Handbook of Japanese Adjectives and Adverbs, especially the adverb section looks like a great way to enrich Japanese knowledge.

I don't have that one, but I think the handbooks are more useful as references. I tried mining from Handbook of Japanese Verbs, but it didn't work out. Now I just use it as a reference, and it's much better.

All About Particles (Kodansha Book) - vosmiura - 2008-09-21

I don't know how Handbook of Japanese Verbs is exactly (its on order) but based on the index I'd guess its a bit different from HoJ A&A in that the Verb book is organised by verb forms, whereas the largest part of the A&A book is focused on 200+ individual adverbs, grouped into sections by function, with several example sentences of usage for each adverb.
