You know your writing system is complicated when ... - anotherjohn - 2016-06-19 ... there is a round on a TV quiz where people attempt to decipher it: RE: You know your writing system is complicated when ... - gaiaslastlaugh - 2016-06-19 The same could be said for English spelling. Or pronunciation. (I should take a video of my poor wife attempting to say "otolaryngologist"). These kind of segments are pretty common. Mainichi Shinbun runs a whole sub-site devoted to kanji knowledge: http://www.mainichi-kotoba.jp/. Probably a good thing, given the deterioration of general knaji knowledge. (My wife took one look at 靴箆 and declared, "「箆」は書けない!".) It may be my imagination, but there seem to be a lot more of these knowledge-oriented shows and segments on Japanese history than on American TV. It's not hard to just watch a few select hours of TV here and there and pick up a lot of information about Japanese history and culture. RE: You know your writing system is complicated when ... - FlameseeK - 2016-06-19 I'm surprised I actually knew 弄ぶ. I wonder how much these guys read. There are so many non-joyo kanji there. EDIT: Woman: 何これ? *proceeds to answer correctly immediately* LOL RE: You know your writing system is complicated when ... - Roketzu - 2016-06-19 That last lady was ridiculously good. I've no idea if she's way above the average Japanese person or not, but I kinda hope so lol. The surprising thing for me was how easily she could instantly recall those I wouldn't guess in a million years, but also hesitated on some I found quite easy. Here is a list of the words for anyone interested in learning them all (Edict doesn't give readings for all of them): RE: You know your writing system is complicated when ... - sholum - 2016-06-19 So... Like half of the categories in Jeopardy? I generally suck at Jeopardy (following along, that is), because most of it is pointless trivia, yet every time a category about English words or stuff about science comes up, I feel like it's just common knowledge. (But holy cow, do they love doing categories where you have to name authors, actors, producers, etc.; I hate those.) I have a feeling that this is the equivalent of those obscure/difficult English words they call for on Jeopardy. Granted, in Jeopardy, it's usually tested by definition or synonym and not just by reading. On a related note, I wish I could find some 芸能界漢字王 online, but those videos seem to be forever gone. It seems kanji quizzes in Japan take the place of spelling bees is English speaking cultures. As we know it's not too hard to spell a Japanese word if you know the pronunciation so they've gotta have something for the trivia shows. RE: You know your writing system is complicated when ... - debrucey - 2016-06-20 What is the name for this round in Japanese? What could I search for on YouTube to see more of it? RE: You know your writing system is complicated when ... - yudantaiteki - 2016-06-20 What was the reading of 殿? It can be used by itself as との in classical but I guess maybe they're looking for しんがり instead? I knew about 20-25% of those, which I guess isn't that bad. RE: You know your writing system is complicated when ... - pm215 - 2016-06-20 Yes, they wanted しんがり. The game format gives you the first kana of each reading (it's the same as the last kana of the previous word), so you can discard との based on that. RE: You know your writing system is complicated when ... - Vempele - 2016-06-21 I knew 39/85, plus 11 correct educated guesses using knowledge of the first kana. |
