help buying manga - Joker - 2016-05-20

Hi

Does any one have experience with hmv.co.jp or cdjapan.co.jp ? I was wondering how safe their packaging is and whether they are reliable.

Thanks

Shipping can be expensive (to Europe at least), but not as expensive as shipping from Japan. And it's a pretty slim selection.

If you have a device on which you can read iBooks, I'd give the Japanese iTunes a browse. Obviously there's no shipping costs, but it can be a pain to keep your iTunes account in Japan.

I used to buy stuff off http://www.yesasia.com/global/en/home.html and they had some very decent prices&shipping rates.

I shop at http://honto.jp/
The prices are lower than sites like YesAsia, but shipping for me was like $17 for 8 books last time. If you get fast EMS shipping it costs even more. They have e-books too, so no shipping fees there. They also have a pretty wide selection.

I haven't shopped at the places the OP mentions, but they sound reliable. I can't imagine getting poorly packed items from websites, like that.

Hi - I've ordered books and manga from CDJapan several times. They always arrive and they are well-packed. I've used a fairly cheap postage option (SAL?) and that takes about 3-4 weeks. There are faster options though.

Thanks for the replies.

I am giving honto.jp a try.

I was recently recommended http://www.ebookjapan.jp/ebj/ for digital manga. They usually have prices that are about $5 per manga.

Not sure where you're located but there's also: http://www.kinokuniya.com/us/

I just bought a manga on there last night and it was super easy with a (US) Visa card. The iPad app is nice too.

I love that they allow you to have a preview (立ち読む) that you can download to the app so you can check the difficulty and quality of the material. For example, I found that the furigana for ハイキュー got difficult to read at times. However ベイビーステップ's scan was much higher quality and I had no problem reading kanji/furigana.

I'm glad to know that its super easy to buy manga there. I hadn't had a chance to buy any manga there yet (no money lol) but thought about buying the missing volumes of Initial D manga there instead of physical volumes as they are at least double the price if not more as physical copies x_x
