What to SRS when going through beginner texts - ilovemykidsanddogs - 2016-03-03
I'm about to finish RTK and I'm trying to get my next study materials in order. I have Genki I and II and I'll probably go to Tobira after that. I'll continue doing RTK reviews but what else do people usually SRS while studying Genki? Core decks? I was thinking about entering Genki vocabulary but it seems like a lot of people are against isolated vocabulary studying. Any suggestions appreciated.

Quizzing on simple vocab cards isn't terrible when they're for words that are in your text, because you'll have the context of the text itself. You'll probably end up abandoning the cards or rewriting them later if you do this, especially for words in kana because they'll become quite confusing as isolated words once you learn some homonyms that overlap the pronunciation of your vocab. (Of course even if the word is in kana in Genki, it likely has a kanji spelling so you could change the card. On the other hand, the kanji spelling might be quite obscure. That, in a nutshell, is the problem that leads people to either use context sentences on the front or elaborate hint systems.)
Using example sentences from the text would be ideal, but I'm pretty sure that any Anki shared decks that contained sentences from Genki were removed out of copyright concerns and it would be a fair effort to enter them all.
If I were in your position, what I'd most likely do is download a core deck, and suspend all the cards, and then un-suspend the vocab words in each chapter as I worked through the book. Of course you could unsuspend other cards for general vocab building too if you wanted.

Start SRSing Genki vocab if you haven't already. I extracted the audio from the CD's for my vocab cards (took a couple of hours with audacity and excel open). These are words you will for SURE see in context while you study. And adding the pronunciation has helped me immensely in pronunciation/inflection.
Otherwise, I'm at around your level (studying Genki, working on RTK). I am removing the reading (in hiragana) from my Genki cards as I learn the kanji for them. It's definitely possible I'd you add audio to the cards like I did.
Core2K is really useful too. It expects that you can recognize Kanji and even though the beginning words can be kind of vague (such as "this kind of", "already", "in this way"), I have definitely seen the vocab frequently enough in the wild that it has been very helpful. I'm suspending production cards right now t reduce workload but you could keep them if you want.
And eventually, just create a deck of words you see in what you read or watch that you want to keep.

Thanks guys, I'm definitely gonna try suspending a core deck and going through it while doing Genki, and if I can figure out how to add audio to cards I'll do that as well since i have the CDs.

Also, use a .csv to import the Genki vocab cards. Create the cards en masse, and use [sound:123.mp3] for the sound field. I found this a lot easier than entering cards one by one. There are a lot of guides on using csv files to mass-import into Genki.
I actually have been meaning to make a youtube video on how to add audio to Anki quickly from CD's so I may just go ahead and do it this weekend.

There are core decks out there which already have audio. Depending on the deck, you may have to copy the sound files into your anki media folder. If you are going to do core, just make sure to download one of those.
