I used to get confused by the endless back and forth between shoguns and emperors but this 9 minute video has cleared that up, and a lot of other things too. It is very funny, totally irreverent, but still strangely helpful.

If you are interested in something a LOT more in depth, the history of japan podcast is very good although a bit dry.
