iKnow is looking for a front-end engineer. If you want to be part of an international development team based in Tokyo, this could be a great opportunity for you. Read on for the details.

Front-End Software Engineer
iKnow! is language learning service with tens of thousands of paying users and almost 10 million hours logged of study time. You can give our service a spin with a one-month free trial using the coupon code tokyodev.
We are owned by a large Japanese service, DMM, but are an independent entity with a small start-up atmosphere and approach, including flex time. We go from ideas to prototypes to working features quickly, and we're looking for someone who can help us every step of the way. We think that fast, focused releases are the best way to craft the best learning experiences for our users.
We're looking for a full-time front-end engineer to join our Tokyo office, preferably with an interest in language-learning. Japanese language experience is not required but welcome. We're also open to overseas developers, and are happy to assist with the visa acquisition process.
You'll be working in a tech environment with modern tools and technologies. We have a sophisticated and well-crafted JavaScript application, targeting modern web browsers. We practice code reviews and offer plenty of opportunities to learn and grow. This is our stack, in brief:
  • ES6/React/HTML/Sass
  • Rails/Ruby
  • AWS
The Hiring Process
Our hiring process is straightforward. If your application looks promising, this is what you can expect:
  • A quick call with a member of our team We'll ask a little about your past experience and current situation, let you know what it's like to work at iKnow!, and answer any questions you may have.
  • Technical challenges interview We've prepared a few challenges to gauge your programming skills and experience. We want you to see how you work your way through a problem iteratively and hear you discuss your approach. We use a collaborative programming web service and you'll be able to search for documentation, so you don't need to memorize libraries or method names. You'll be able to run your code as often as you like to debug and refine it.
  • Architectural challenge We'll ask you to complete a small-scale architecture challenge. This will be an offline task that can be completed in about a day of work.
If all goes well, we'll reach out to you quickly and make an offer.
Applying
If you think you're a good fit for our team, please send an email to iknow@tokyodev.com with the following:
  • A self-introduction, focused on your experience and interest in programming
  • Some code you'd like to share, or an account of an experience that had an impact on you
  • Links to any online profiles you'd like to share (GitHub, Twitter, etc)
  • A resume or LinkedIn profile

I interviewed with them 3-4 weeks ago for backend, so they are definitely looking overseas as well. Their dev team sounds pretty great too and I think there are some good opportunities possibly available to do good things with the platform now that they are with DMM.

(I didn't make it far in the interview process. They are getting a lot of applications; they've been advertising in a lot of places.)
