'no' particle, noob questions - Arino - 2016-01-24 Two very easy questions: 1 - I want to reply "NEC's Computer" as in "a computer manufactured/made by NEC", is it ok to do use the 'no' particle to indicate that? A: これは、なんですか。 B: NECのパソコンです。 2 - If I'm talking about some noun that was already mentioned in the conversation, is it valid to follow up with the particle+main noun (bold part) omitted in this example? A: これわ、どこのかさですか。 B: それわ、日本のかさです。 A: だれのかさですか。 B: 私のかさです。 RE: 'no' particle, noob questions - RandomQuotes - 2016-01-24 1. Yes, it's ok to use の in that fashion. 2. A: これ B: それわは、日本のかさです。 A: だれのかさですか。 B: 私のかさです。 Yes, this conversation could also go as: A: これは、どこのかさですか。 B: それは、日本のかさです。 A: だれのですか。 B: 私のです。 RE: 'no' particle, noob questions - Arino - 2016-01-24 It's easy to forget you have to type "ha" for Microsoft IME even though you read it as "wa"... ![]() Thanks, just to make sure I understood you, you can do both: A: だれのですか。 B: 私のです。 and A: だれですか。 B: 私です。 right? Thanks again! RE: 'no' particle, noob questions - sholum - 2016-01-24 For the second part, let me emphasize from RandomQuotes' post that の was left in the sentences. RandomQuotes Wrote:A: だれのですか。 Think of it kind of like saying "Who's is it?" instead of "Who's <thing> is it?"; you don't leave out the possessive bit, just the part that's known. RE: 'no' particle, noob questions - Arino - 2016-01-24 Got it now, thanks RandomQuotes and sholum for the help. I'm not a native speaker of english but I really have no excuse to not know the difference between whose and who's. Nice hint. Anyway, think I got it now: だれですか。 Who is it? だれのですか。Whose is it? それは、だれのパソコンですか。 Whose computer is that one? 私のです。It is mine. Thanks everyone.
