Rikaisama unsigned? - CureDolly - 2016-01-09

For quite a while now I have been having a problem with Rikaisama getting disabled when I restart Firefox. When I try to reinstall it Firefox blocks it saying that it is an unsigned addon.

With a lot of fiddling around I usually seem to manage to trick Firefox into letting it install, but it often happens again when I restart.

It doesn't affect Rikaichan, just Rikaisama.

Does anyone know what is going on here? Is Rikaisama unsigned? Am I the only one experiencing this?

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - SomeCallMeChris - 2016-01-09

I haven't had a problem, but I haven't updated rikai-sama in quite a while. Maybe the signing got skipped on a recent version?

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - CureDolly - 2016-01-09

Hmm. Maybe I should try installing an older version next time it happens.

Thanks for the feedback.

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - sholum - 2016-01-09

I just switched to the dev edition of Firefox, since they implemented that stupid policy (it's not even optional); it was the only way I could get rikaisama to work, though it ended up with some of its own problems (if I were to use it in this quick reply box, for example, it'd crash the window...)

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - CureDolly - 2016-01-09

We don't have a lot of people reporting this problem though. Could it be a Mac-only issue?

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - sholum - 2016-01-09

Nope. It's a Firefox problem. I haven't tried replicating it in Puppy, but I'm on Windows 7 right now.

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - CureDolly - 2016-01-09

This is a pretty serious problem, potentially rendering Rikaisama unusable. I hope it can be fixed.

If it's just a matter of signing it, it ought to be pretty easily fixable didn't it?

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - SomeCallMeChris - 2016-01-09

In the version history, it indicates Rikaisama has been signed since August 2015.
http://rikaisama.sourceforge.net/versions.html

http://forum.koohii.com/thread-5351-post-230657.html#pid230657

Here, cb doesn't exactly say that rikai is signed, but it's implied by the way he answers looking for another solution to the security error.

It's not clear to me how he's signing either. There might be issues with self-signing. It's also possible that he's right in his speculation in the other thread, and Firefox is throwing up the wrong error but complaining because it's an external add-on.

In any case, since it's already signed, it's not as simple as just signing it.

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - justusperthes - 2016-01-09

You can use unsigned addons but you have to override the signing. It is under "What can I do if Firefox disables an installed, unsigned add-on?"

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-on-signing-in-firefox

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - CureDolly - 2016-01-09

This looks promising. I'll try it next time the problem comes up.

So long as Firefox thinks the problem is an unsigned addon, I guess it ought to work.

Thank you so much.

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - justusperthes - 2016-01-09

It worked for me. Before my Rikaisama would say something like "This addon could not be verified for use in Firefox. It has been deactivated" under addons, but now it lets me use it anyways but warns me to proceed with caution.

Sorry. Accidental double post.

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - CureDolly - 2016-01-10

I am SO sorry. Is there a way to delete one's posts?

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - CureDolly - 2016-01-10

The problem happened again today and I tried the method indicated. Rikaisama still wouldn't install. No message, just nothing happened.

So I tried disabling "whitelist required" as well as "signatures required". This seemed to do the trick.

Passing it along in case it helps anyone.

Oh and note that Firefox will reset these values so you need to do it again every time you have to install.

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - jakep - 2016-01-11

Firefox is requiring all addons to go through their verification process to stop malware.
Its just that verification process is rather slow (months), so some addons (like rikaisama) don't bother to submit them.

Currently Firefox just informs you that it is unsigned, but with Firefox 44 it will just not let you use it at all. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Add-ons/Extension_Signing

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - CureDolly - 2016-01-11

So essentially Rikaisama is about to become completely unusable?

I am disabling Firefox updates and hoping Firefox won't reset me and update me without asking. Though if they continue this trend, I guess it's only a matter of time before Firefox makes updates compulsory.

It seems really strange and sad if Rikaisama is essentially about to die because of this.

Since this is something of an emergency, I am popping in a quick tutorial in the style of our Kawaii Japanese site for people who have their Firefox in Japanese.

This is how to disable Firefox updates:

1. Go to Firefox settings

2. Choose 詳細 (Advanced in English) from the sidebar

3. Choose 更新 (Updates in English) from the top tabs

4. enable the lowest radio button, telling Firefox not to check for updates and telling you how dangerous it is.

Not as dangerous as the risk of losing Rikaisama, I would say.

Of course Firefox may muriyari us at any point, but this may help for the moment.

You can grab the Developer/Nightly build of Firefox to get around this.

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - SomeCallMeChris - 2016-01-11

A conversation about upcoming changes starts here in the main rikai-sama, thread: http://forum.koohii.com/thread-5351-post-230307.html#pid230307

cb4960 answers a few posts down that is expected to work through version 46 and probably beyond, depending on exactly what changes they make. (He also states explicitly in this conversation that rikaisama is signed.)

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - CureDolly - 2016-01-11

Thanks for the link. I hadn't heard of Pale Moon, but it might be the way to go if Mozilla really makes Rikaisama impossible.

I don't really understand the signing situation. cb4960 seems to be saying it isn't a problem at least until Firefox 44, but it is for me and clearly for some other people. I also know people who are having no trouble at all with Rikaisama, so I really don't know what is going on.

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - SomeCallMeChris - 2016-01-11

It is puzzling. You might PM cb4960 or post in the main thread (I'm sure he gets notifications of post in that thread). I wouldn't expect an -very- quick response, it sometimes takes him a few days to get around to it but it's certain to get your questions to him eventually. Whether he sees this thread is more chancy.

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - Zarxrax - 2016-01-11

Are you SURE you aren't using an outdated version of rikaisama? Most recent version is 22.9 from 2015-12-30

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - CureDolly - 2016-01-11

Here is a screenshot of from the addons control panel with the warning that Rikaisama cannot be verified and one should check the distribution source and use it with caution. Firefox has been disabling it and refusing to re-install. Currently I have signatures required and whitelist required turned off.

When I click 詳細 I get this. As you see, it is definitely 22.9 and repeats the warning.

In case it helps diagnose the problem, I should say that before I disabled signatures required, I could usually get Rikaisama re-installed after several refusals by turning Rikaichan on and off, deinstalling and installing it and trying to install Rikaisama. I am absolutely ignorant about these things so I don't know what it is I did that worked.

I just know that Firefox was disabling Rikaisama after restarts, refusing re-installation (sometimes with "cannot be verified" type messages, sometimes with none) and after a lot of restarting and twiddling with Rikaichan I would end up getting an installation working.

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - Zarxrax - 2016-01-11

Sounds like it could be an issue with firefox, as it definitely doesn't do any of that to me. Maybe an issue limited to the mac version if that's what you are using?
Sometimes something in firefox could have gotten broken over numerous upgrade cycles or installing/uninstalling plugins. Trying a profile refresh could possibly fix it? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - CureDolly - 2016-01-11

Currently everything is working as it should so I am inclined not to breathe on it at the moment.

If problems recur though I will definitely start with a refresh and report back here.

Sholum-san says he is having the same problems on Windows (earlier in this thread) so I don't think it is limited to the Mac version. That is what I am using though.

RE: Rikaisama unsigned? - jmignot - 2016-01-12

I have just upgraded to version 22.9, and Firefox does not block it on my Mac.
