Feature request : Japanese keywords - jmignot - 2016-01-03
This point may have been discussed already, but searching this (actually any) forum is such a pain
…Furthermore, new members may come up with new ideas.
I have been using this forum for years now (I am a bit slow—I know), and I am coming to the point where I often happen to know one or several Japanese words containing the kanji I am currently reviewing.
In such a case, I feel that it is a waste of time sticking to the kanji-keyword association given by Heisig. What I would like is using a "cloze deletion" prompt instead.
I know it is possible to edit the "keyword" field in RevTK, but doing that, one loses the original keyword, which is still useful for searching purposes.
What would be great is if there was an extra field, which could be used optionally (for instance through a switch in the site preferences) as the prompt for reviewing . Initially, this field would contain a copy of the Keyword, but could be replaced, on an one-by-one-kanji basis, by anything else, e.g. a cloze-deletion pattern. For instance, 転 <-> revolve could be changed to 運 – , or 運 – [drive] for disambiguation's sake, in the new field.
Even better, that field could contain several different choices, with appropriate separators (運 – / – 勤 / – 職 ), from which the program would pick one randomly at review time.
This can probably be achieved easily (except perhaps for the random choice) in Anki after exporting one's data from RevTK, but I like the idea of continuing to use this site for doing my kanji reviews (nice design, back up, simple no-nonsense interface, etc.).
How much it would cost to add this option to the present site is a question I leave to more competent programmers. I would just be interested to know how many of you would like to use such a feature.
PS: I remember that some time ago, there were a couple of tweaks available for this site based on "Greasemonkey scripts". Is this option still available? Would that be applicable to the present suggestion?

For what it's worth, I have my deck set up to look like
Front
車を運てんする
Back
車を運転する - to drive a car
I find using a short sentence or phrase with the reading makes disambiguation easy and natural.
運てん without the sentence is fine, but not all words are. 運＿ is problematic because of words like 運動 that share the 運＿ pattern.
If I moved to the site, I'd use parentheses to isolate the kanji's reading and put the English translation in the 'story' field to use as a hint. I thought there was a separate 'hint' field but I don't see one now. I don't suppose it matters, you can put both in the story field. Makes them very unshareable though, unless there was a way to mark them as 'Japanese Keyword' stories.
I think my actual keyword is 転ぶ ... I prefer common kun-reading words when they exist, it makes much more of a 1:1 relationship between the character and the keyword. But same idea for layout, just the reading for the character is isolated with markup. If every character could be done with a common kun reading word, using a 'key phrase' might be unnecessary, but of course there isn't such a word for every character.
I don't know if that helps either with laying out the cards or deciding improvements on the site, but I thought I'd mention it since it works for me.

These are indeed very good suggestions. I would certainly like to use something like this if I switched to Anki for my Kanji reviews.
On this site, one could try to replace Heisig's keyword by a word using the "kun" reading of the kanji as you suggest, when such a word exists, or even a short phrase within the limit of the number of characters allowed, but this would be a bit awkward, and again, I would prefer to keep Heisig's keyword there.
Using the story field is certainly possible but this implies that, in order not to defeat the hint, it should not contain any information in which the answer appears explicitly. In my case, I tend to keep a lot of stuff there, so it would not be convenient.
In summary, this idea seems difficult to implement on this site without an extra field. Such an extra field mignt also be handy for those (like me) who are using "localized" versions of RTK.

I think the best idea is to use japanese keywords that are kanji themselves (if they are actually in use (or if they denote a very commonly used word which is usually written in kana)). If there isn't one, then go to a word that uses only that kanji that has the same meaning (or a different one if the original keyword is horrible). Then the only problem is do you use transitives or intransitives, alongside some multiple similar adjectives for one kanji. And the problem of one "word" using multiple kanji, and deciding who gets what word, so things like あう, つとめる and とる are basically impossible to use of course.
Or you could use compounds with the targeted kanji hiragana'd that have the correct meaning.

I agree that it would be great to have a separate field for japanese keywords. For a few words that I knew from the start I simply replaced the keyword, like 村 (keyword: むら)。
I don't know if it could help you or someone else, but this is how I do with most other words:
I keep the original (or occasionally modified) keyword, and add at least one reading in a parenthesis, like so:
flip (ひるがえ.す ホン訳)
above (うえ あ.げる ジョウ手）
thin (タン水 冷タン 濃タン タン々 タン白)
For some I add a lot of "hint"-words, and try to choose them either according to commonness or suitability to the original keyword (preferrably both). If there are both kun- and on-yomi, I try to have at least one of each, and if there is a second common on-yomi one example of that as well. (Sometimes I take the examples straight from the excellent "sample words" tab and often I look up common words with the kanji in jisho.org as well)
If I learn a new word/reading/compound while reading or in japanese class I often add that as well.
The "keyword" gets really long sometimes, but it helps me connect the kanji to real words and avoid most mistakes because of similar meanings/keywords.
Although I try to I'm not sure I always choose the "best" examples, but in the end it doesn't matter, I can always improve/add to it, and in the end I hope I won't need the english keyword at all (and sometime after that, maybe no reviews at all
