Official Kanji Kentei smartphone apps - Sebastian - 2015-12-18

There are 2 new official apps for smartphones (each one with versions for Android and IOS) and an Ipad only app for preparing the 漢字検定.

As far as I know, they are all in Japanese only, so they could be a bit complicated to use for beginners, but I think the interface is simple enough that you will get how it works even if you don't understand exactly the instructions.

I've only used 漢検スタート, since I have an Android phone, and the other smartphone app is not available in my country.

漢検スタートhas basically 3 sections:

1.- You can take a short test and let the app determine your level, or you can set it manually. In my experience, the test is too short and not too reliable.

2.- Drills for all the sections in the test. You can practice drills for each section of the test, and the drills are divided in separate smaller sets. The drills basically consist of flashcards where you see the question first, choose your answer and then can see if you got it right, or else the app will show you the correct answer. You can mark questions for further reference, or pass if you don't know the answer. You can do all the drills for a given set, only the ones you haven't finished already, only those that you marked, or only those that you passed.

3.- Mock tests. The format is closely based on the real test, though of course answering in your phone is different, so I'd advice you to take paper mock tests too.

For levels 10 to 6, you get free drills and 1 free mock test. If you pay (aprox 1.5 USD per level) you can get 12 more mock tests.

For levels 5 to 1, you have to pay if you want to do any drills or mock tests. Each option will cost you aprox 5.5 USD per level (so, approximately 11 USD if you unlock both drills and mock tests).

Unfortunately, the app doesn't have spaced repetition, which is a bummer. On the other hand, it comes from the organization that makes the test, so the contents should be comprehensive.

Personally, I'd love to just rip the data and import it into Anki, but unfortunately I don't know how to do that.

Darn, it's region-blocked on the Google Play store. I'm in the US, and can't download it. Sad

Oh, didn't notice there were two. I meant 漢検ラーニング. I'll give 漢検スタート a try now!
