Here's a new Japanese reader that came out this year... - john555 - 2015-12-13

I thought I'd share this with the forum because this book just came out in August 2015:

The Routledge Intermediate-Advanced Japanese Reader

http://www.amazon.com/Routledge-Intermediate-Advanced-Japanese-Reader/dp/0415593786/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1450016945&sr=8-1&keywords=japanese+reader+noriko

I borrowed it from my public library to have a look before purchasing.

It has a lot of interesting features.  The readings are organized into the following categories

Part I  Newspapers:  Reporting Texts (Informing)
Part II  Newspapers:  Opinion Texts (Appealing; Evaluating)
Part III  Fiction (Entertaining)
Part IV  Spoken Language Texts (Engaging)
Part V  Essays (Narrating; Responding)

I read some of the first reading passage.  The book is definitely not for beginners.

To me, the one major sin this book commits is that the vocabulary in the back of the book does not include all the words used in the reading passage, so you'll have to carry around a pocket dictionary with you.

The other drawback is that the book doesn't include English translations of the Japanese reading passages, so there is no way to easily check your understanding of the material.

Actually, this looks pretty useful. As an intermediate-advanced I wouldn't expect it to include every word in the local dictionary, only the non-common words, nor would I expect it to carry E-J translations either. In any case, this looks like it's going on my to buy list.

There's also this, which has been spoken of highly in this forum before:

I like that the Routledge book contains a diversity of content. The lack of translations shouldn't be an issue, as you can send pics of an essay you're working on to a teacher, who can help explain it to you in simpler Japanese.
