Best way to use Shadowing Books? - PotbellyPig - 2015-12-03
All my Japanese studying has been recognition for a long time. I want to do some production practice and go through the 2 shadowing books. Would you just go through it normally or would you load up the data into anki so that you get into a groove of going over the same material a good number of times? I doubt I would remember to repeat the material if I don't do that.

Some people use it to practice their speech fluency and sound production, as closely as possible to the Japanese native speakers. In this case, it is best to have a trained teacher who can correct you right on the spot when it does not sound correct.
Also, speech shadowing and speech comprehension are two different things. Other areas where I have seen speech shadowing being used are for rectifying "stuttering"condition.
And it can be used for the purpose of (ものまね) mimicking and impersonation, in the entertainment industry for profession such as voice artistes and comedians.

Thanks. I understand the theory behind it but I was wondering if using the books with anki is a good idea or not. Right now a tutor isn't practical for me.

As long as the text or audio is easily accessible it is a good idea to use Anki or similar software. Honestly, it is a more convenient way of studying.

Well the audio is there and I guess I could scan the pages if I don't want to transcribe each bit of text. For those books, there are 10 passages per MP3 file so I can either leave it as is or cut it up into individual examples.

The question is how many would you intend to do in one study session. I suspect it would be one to ten passages.
How about gradually transcribing 10 passages and then splitting the corresponding MP3 over a period of time? That is separating the MP3 then writing the text for that MP3. Remember, the easier it gets the greater desire you will have in leaving it as is.

Those apps look good but they are in the Japan App Store. I think I would have to go through a lot of hoops to buy them. I am in the USA. I get Japanese apps all the time using a VPN on android but I think it's harder on an iPhone. Especially if you need to use a credit card. If there is a way around this let me know.

Perhaps the android have similar Japanese apps? I'm afraid I don't know much about android stuff. Hopefully, some others who know a way around this can let us know.
