Hong Kong Version & Taiwan Version Confusion - Rael89 - 2012-10-10

I was thinking of studying a little Mandarin lately so I wanted to buy some books and manga off yesasia to get myself started, but I'm having a little trouble understanding what to get.

I want to make sure what I get is actually in mandarin.
The traditional characters are no problem because I plan on studying them, but Taiwan version stuff, the ones I would assume are in Mandarin are less plentiful than Hong Kong version stuff on that particular site.

Is Chinese just Chinese and I would be ok ordering the "Hong Kong Version" materials or would I be stuck with a bunch of Cantonese resources that I don't necessarily need right now?

A more specific example:
Would I be able to use this to study mando?

You need to be careful with this. I think most HK 漫畫 will be in Mandarin, though some may be in written Cantonese. The problem is that many of them are translated in a way that people don't actually talk (you have to keep in mind, they generally don't speak Mandarin in HK). I read some HK 漫畫 a while back and it was translated in a very formal style. Switched to the Taiwan version and it was MUCH more natural.

Try ordering from books.com.tw if you can. There are TONS of 漫畫 in Taiwan. 東立 is one of the major publishers of comic books here.

Thanks for the response. I guess I'll stick to Taiwan versions then. I'll definitely check out that site for books I can't get at yesasia. Thanks again.
