Hanzi Beyond RTH 2 - myoshiquick - 2012-08-30

Hi, everybody. I hope that you are all well.

I am starting to pick up characters beyond those contained in the two RTH volumes, but would like to continue using the method. Would anybody have any suggestions about how to move forward, or is anybody else doing this?

For the few characters I have already, I have simply made 3 x 5 paper index cards old-school Heisig style, but would like some sort of digital solution. I have thought about starting a new Anki deck for the additional characters or using other software. Is there already a solution or a group out there for this?

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Well, like you said, if you have a RTH deck in Anki, you could simply make new cards for the characters you find. Or you could create a new deck using Anki. Those are probably the easiest solutions.

If you have been using this website for your reviewing, you could make new stories and save them here. If you find an unknown character, you can copy and paste them in the 'browse' field in the study page. And for characters outside RTH, the name of the character will be something like Unicode-xxxx. At least that's how it works on the RTK website, but I'm not sure if Fabrice added characters outside RTH on the RTH website.

I would advise you though not to stick too long to the RTH method after finishing. You can keep reviewing for a while, but I would start learning vocab, grammar and start reading/listening etc. When you find a new character (which is probably a rather uncommon character), it's probably enough to just learn the meaning of the word you found it in with its pronunciation. Because you have already learned so many new characters, it will probably stick without learning and reviewing an elaborate RTH story.

kame3, thank you for your reply, and sorry that mine comes so late. I wanted to give others a chance to comment, but you were the only one!

I have taken your suggestion and started a new Anki deck adding additional characters as I need them.

I also take to heart your advice about not clinging to the method too tenaciously. Indeed, I already have systems in place for vocabulary items and grammar, speaking and listening, etc.; I have been learning Chinese for a year, and wanted to supplement my classroom-textbook work with Heisig, something that he cautions against in the introduction. I also used RTK1-3 when I studied Japanese several years ago and found them very helpful, but I find that my ability to write the characters by hand has trailed off as I do most of my Japanese writing with devices now. Hence, I would like to be a bit more vigilant with my Chinese handwriting.

Thanks again for your comments, and good luck to you in your studies.
