Displaying Characters... - gyuujuice - 2010-05-16 大家好, So I am using a Mac and I am able to view Japanese characters just fine. I am also able to type in Japanese, traditional hanzi and simplified hanzi. 1) When writing in Word or Pages some of the characters look like 口. 2) Sometimes when I copy text from the internet I get a bunch of "[?]" 3) I downloaded an anki deck called, "Remembering The Hanzi Book 1" and some of the characters don't show up properly and some of them are boxes. 请你帮我吗? (請你邦我嗎?) 大家謝謝! Displaying Characters... - bflatnine - 2010-05-16 Do you have any Chinese-specific fonts installed? You should, being on a Mac. If not, make sure and install STKai, STHei and STSong at least. I'd also install HAN NOM A and HAN NOM B, so you'll never have to worry about running across any rare characters that simply don't exist in most fonts. They aren't the greatest looking fonts ever (they're OK though), but they're free and they cover all of the Unicode CJK extensions A and B, for a total of around 77,000 glyphs. Beyond that, I'm not sure what the problem could be with 1. I seem to remember something about Word having trouble with Chinese text, but I haven't used Word in years and don't really know anything about Pages. As far as 2, sometimes you will come across stuff encoded in Big5 (traditional) or GB (simplified) instead of Unicode. That could be the problem. I've found that TextEdit usually has no trouble with different encoding systems, but every once in a while I have to open something in NeoOffice first. For 3, this should fix itself if you get 1 fixed. BTW, it should be 『請你幫助我吧』 or (please help me). 「嗎」 is only used with yes/no questions, so if you wanted to phrase it like "could you help me," you'd say 『你可以幫助我嗎?』 I assume that 邦 in the traditional version was just a typo, since you got it right in the simplified version, but it should be 幫. EDIT: Also, in Anki, I'd make sure to set the font for the fields that contain Chinese characters to a Chinese-specific font. Otherwise you might end up with Japanese variants being displayed. I haven't really started Chiense so my grammar sucks really bad. ^__^ Thanks for the mini lesson. |
