Links to good media for learning Mandarin - TheVinster - 2010-03-29

I'm studying Japanese, but a Chinese girl I met recommended a song to me. I like it, so I'll just pass it on. It's really catchy to me.

Anyone got any good recommendations for more good Mandarin music? Thanks to the OP, I never thought punk sounds good.

Maybe post-rockish stuff or alternative stuff in Mandarin? Preferably they have lyrics but anything is fine.

新裤子 (New Pants) are pretty awesome.

Other than that you could try 反光镜. I'm not a big fan, but they're the closest thing out there.

The annoying thing about studying Mandarin is that there is almost no good music. You will have much more luck looking for rap, although it's still not that great. (哈狗帮 and 蛋堡.)

I've finally began to find artists that sing in Mandarin that I like! It's pop and pop rock, not rock and rap unlike most of the other recommendations in this thread; here it is:

当秋天遇上秋天 完整版 -- 梁心颐
http://www.yinyuetai.com/video/125920

This one is nice too, especially the part where the woman sings (yeah, I really like female vocals):
破晓 -- 南拳妈妈
http://www.yinyuetai.com/video/6397

I thought I would never find any, heh. I'll be honest that it's not exactly the type of music I like the most — which would be something more like Pahinta Tänään by Indica or Nemuri by Onmyo-Za (the chorus is sooo catchy) — but I actually liked these Mandarin songs and it made me more motivated to keep looking for more, so I'll not be just listening to songs in other languages.

This guy has been combining Jay CHou with WoW. Interesting combination.

[EDIT] I seem to kill threads. Sad

This is what you do to threads:

(So off-topic, hah.)

- A cartoon parodying some of the annoyances of living in Nanjing (南京话)

- An angry woman arguing with her daughter in law on the streets of Beijing.

- Little human interest piece on a Chinese adult movie star. (Safe for work.)

I'll just be sharing this for people interested in non-mainstream music

Now that's what I'm talking about — a Melodic Power Metal band with female vocals in Mandarin!
Seraphim (六翼天使) -最終的回憶 (Last Memory)
Seraphim (六翼天使) - 復活 (Resurrect)
===
About the band
The band is from Taiwan, and it seems every album released by them has both English and Mandarin versions. The tracks range from slow to very fast, as is the norm for most Power Metal albums. Here's the Metal Archives page with info and lyrics: Metal Archives - Seraphim.

gdaxeman,

Lara and her band are pretty good (Lara's hot) although I've never loaded up on them before.
They were put together/produced I think by Jay Chou.

AN BRIEF OVERVIEW OF CPOP
What got me interested in Chinese music were JAY CHOU's faster paced catchy songs, but as I started trying to sing along with them, I developed a deep appreciation of the slow songs and think a lot of the faster ones are not so good. A variety of songs (not totally representative of his style, but some of my favorite ones

You might like these but I'm more of a fan of male vocals
KHALIL FONG (best male vocals IMO, heavily influenced by Michael Jackson)

Fairyland in Reality (F.I.R.), a rock/pop band with female vocals from Taiwan. Some of my favorite songs:

Find my Way (from 讓我們一起微笑吧, 2009)
刺鳥 (from 無限, 2005)
千年之戀 (from 無限, 2005)

this video has lots of dancing women:

a thorough playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9961991597254F92

Cui Jian is Korean, and Wu Bai is Taiwanese. I don't know why foreigners make better Chinese music than natives.

Thanks for the recommendations, but for the record, although his parents are 朝鲜族, 崔健 is Chinese and is a native-speaker. http://baike.baidu.com/view/23312.htm

Also do you really consider Taiwanese non-native speakers of Chinese?

Here's a funny clip I share a lot: http://youtu.be/WIjR_kgJ0t0
