Okay, I've looked everywhere for this...but how do I check average answer time in Anki? I know I can check the average answer time of a single card in the browser, but I'd like an average of the deck, if possible. It would be awesome to track average answer time to see how much I'm progressing in answering more quickly.

On my mac:

click a deck
Click the "graph" icon on the upper right hand side
scroll down to the "review time" chart. It's beneath the chart.

Today I started thinking about the cases when I do use sentences. One case is for remembering whether a verb is transitive or intransitive. E.g.

ドアが開く。
The door opens.

ドアを開ける。
Someone opens the door.

I'm still bad at remembering which one to use when, ut using sentences has helped. For reference, before using sentences for this I had cards like:

（が）開く

or added "(intransitive)" to the card. That didn't help me at all.

Other uses are for verbs like:
広める、広まる、広がる、広げる

in cases like that short sentences serve as mnemonic for the meaning. Otherwise, plain vocab is the way to go.

You know what, I don't have any cloze cards. But that's probably just due to ignorance on my part. When I was first learning how to use anki I found a lot of things frustrating. So when I finally found a method that worked for me I just stopped learning about anki's more advanced features (like cloze) and just focused on reviews. Can you post a few examples you have of cloze sentences?

I should say that now that I have enough kanji + vocab to pass N3, I'm focusing more on grammar. This means that my total number of reps a day has been decreasing, which I guess is giving me more time to revisit this stuff.

All of my clozes are either particles or inflections:

へや{{c1::を}} 出る ときは、かならず かぎを かけて ください。
(This is from some JLPT workbook or practice test and I got it wrong at some point, probably put に in there.)

I can't find transitive examples but to steal from the example above:

ドア{{c1::が}}開{{c2::く}}。

ドア{{c1::を}}開{{c2::ける}}。

So depending on which card it is you need to use the particle to guess the correct transitive context or use the transitive to guess the correct particle.

Also don't make these more than 10% of your deck because they eat up time. Just use them to clean up habitual mistakes.
