Looking for an iOS kanji recognition app - Kuroro - 2015-09-11

Does anybody know any good iOS app that is capable of providing the user with the reading of a kanji (and possibly compounds too) upon taking a picture of it?

Not by taking a photo, but Midori allows you to write kanji on the screen.

Well up to now I've been using imiwa and the chinese keyboard to write kanji, but I often end up having troubles with those that involve a lot of strokes that's why I was hoping I could just take a picture of the word Tongue Anyway I checked out the app you recommended and it has a really good text analysis function (whereas imiwa handles texts in a way that I don't really like), so I'll probably get that soon thank you for your answer Smile

There's one called Yomiya. I haven't tried it, but it gets mostly good reviews.

On iTunes it has a nearly equal number of 5 star and 1 star reviews...

29 vs. 13 on Japanese iTunes.

Hmm. That doesn't sound great either.

I tried an app with similar functions several years ago (can't remember the name).

It worked well if the contrast between the characters and background was strong. For example, reading a book in a well-lit room was no problem, but in many other situations it would not recognise anything. That might account for the reviews being either strongly positive or negative.

Sorry not a straight answer, but if you can get a hold of an old Nintendo DS and some kind of adapter you can play lots of kanji games that were only available in Japan.

See old thread Kanji Games for the Nintendo DS

Then again I have never checked iOS in Japan... it would make sense that there are lots of kanji games on it too. Although.. the DS had a pen so hmm.

Well I would use it mostly with printed articles and maybe some screenshots of in-game dialogues so the contrast shouldn't be a problem, anyway I may give it a try, if I do so I'll let you know how well it worked out for me. Thank you for taking the time to answer Smile

EDIT: Thank you ファブリス I do have a nintendo DS (I'm currently using it to play Zelda in japanese, since the game allows you to see furigana by just pressing on a kanji in the dialogues), I'll make sure to check out the thread you suggested Wink

How about using Japanese OCR (CamDictionary has good records, though I have not tried it myself) + imiwa, which also gives you information on the kanji constituting a word?

Looking for an iOS kanji recognition app - Kuroro - 2015-09-14

I looked up CamDictionary but it hasn't been updated since 2013 so Yomiya is probably a better option

There’s a free version of CamDictionary you can try which limits the number of look-ups (the paid version has no limit).

Recognition seems quite good. To use if for Japanese you can either connect to the Internet or download a dictionary and use it off-line (the dictionaries cost ¥600 each).

There are two dictionaries for Japanese-English, both of which are good in quality but not quantity, i.e. the number of headwords is small.

Yomiwa on the other hand appears to use an off-line version of Jim Breen’s WWWJDIC dictionary and thus probably has a much wider word coverage but with less detail. I’d need to try it to confirm that of course.
