Japanese to Japanese dictionary app - Joebluntz - 2015-08-27

Sorry if this has been asked before. I am looking for a 国語辞典 app for iPhone. I've seen a couple on the App Store but since it seems like most decent ones cost upwards of 10 dollars I would like to see if anyone has recommendations before I make a purchase . If possible I want to be able to import lists into anki similar to imiwa.

Thanks in advance!

For my Android devices I just have EBPocket Pro and use EPWING dictionaries with them (including 大辞泉、明鏡、大辞林、広辞苑, etc) so I can search many dictionaries at once. I'm pretty sure iOS has EPWING viewer apps too.

I don't think you'll get far with the lists deal, but for most general use purposes, 三省堂 should be more than enough. It's my standard dictionary for when I want to look something up, and then, if I still need specifics, I use 大辞林。Afterwards, if I still can't figure things out, I give in and use EPWing Pocket to view 研究者.

But with the 三省堂 app, I think you're gonna wanna go with this one here: https://itunes.apple.com/jp/app/id884892027?mt=8

The same dictionary is available for slightly less as another app, but it doesn't have handwriting input, and selecting words can be exceptionally frustrating at time. Had I known better, I simply would've shelled out more at the time. It's the same company that makes the 大辞林 app, so the handwriting and word-selection functions should be phenomenal in the version I linked.

大辞林 on iOS is a great app and has pitch accent codes. It's possible to open it directly from Anki if you put a special URL in your cards. I've been looking for something similar on Android, but they all look like junk.

Thanks for the suggestions! I should have mentioned that I am mainly looking for a way to drill vocabulary for the 漢字検定 with Japanese definitions. I am currently drilling from English to Japanese but I rather just drill in Japanese. Either way I am gonna definitely look into the recommendations.

Any apps with mono Japanese and flashcard capability (SRS or Leitner or something more than just start to finish)? Or (it possible?) ability to export to anki or another SRS app?

iPhones already have Japanese dictionaries on them for Safari. Just click on a word and pick 'define' and it will show you the definition. By default, if your iPhone is set to English you won't have a Japanese dictionary, but you can click 'manage' and choose to install スーパー大辞林 J-J or Wisdom J-E. It won't understand conjugated verbs, but it's good for everything else.

(Maybe not really what you're looking for, but it's good to know either way!)

Good reminder. I haven't used that feature in a while. If the phone is set to English it's a pain in the butt to do the manage thing every time you want to look something up so I should probably just turn the phone into Japanese. Weird things happen when I do that though - like my Google news turns into Tokyo news instead of my local news.

If it's not hard to change languages, you could always try to switch between the two as needed. I leave my Android phone set to Japanese most of the time, but switch to English if I want to see the English reviews on non-Japanese apps and such.

Hmm? On mine I just had to add it once in 'manage' and after that I've always been able to look stuff up in either Japanese or English.

The best I think you can ask for is recording your word list digitally and then using Rikaisama to plug in the definitions and audio.

That would work. Does that exist?

Japanese to Japanese dictionary app - Raulsen - 2015-09-02

An app for doing that exactly? Not that I'm aware of. Rikaisama needs the words online, so I just type out the list when I need to add new words.
