Kanji I can't read - yudantaiteki - 2015-08-10

I'm always surprised by how many kanji are out there that I don't know; I feel like my reading is fairly good but then when I sit down to read something and make sure I look up every kanji I'm not sure about, it reveals my ignorance. Especially when it's something like a video game that doesn't have a limited set of vocabulary like the academic articles I read.

I'm playing 閃の軌跡II; the kiseki series as a whole is at a fairly high reading level in terms of kanji. These are the kanji I've encountered so far that I couldn't read. Some I definitely should have known, others I'm not sure I've ever seen before. (One or two of these had furigana, but most of them didn't. Although maybe 30% of them occurred in voiced dialogue.)

茹でる (this one hurt to look up)
管轄 (should have known that)

愉しむ (I hate looking up something and finding out it's just a less common kanji for a common word)

手練れ and 手練 in the same speech box! Not fair Smile

Most of these I could figure out the meaning from the context and at least one of the kanji, but it's a humbling experience to look everything up Smile

I knew most of those words and all but one of the kanji (肚), but then I exclusively read VNs. Never seen 出奔, 尖塔 (these I could read), 検める, 錠前, 詰所 or 熱燗 (misrecognized 燗 until I looked it up); I dimly recall seeing 渾名 but it would have had to be over two years ago, before I started SRSing words. I think I've seen all of the others in multiple works.

This one is actually pretty common (in fiction at least). 明鏡 (only 楽しむ is listed at the top of the entry):

愉悦・愉快などを踏まえて「▽愉しむ」、娯楽などを踏まえて「▽娯しむ」とも書き、それぞれ「酒[空想・旅行]を愉しむ」「寄席演芸を娯しむ」などと好まれるが、一般には「楽」でまかなう。「たのしみ」「たのしい」も同様

Do you add new Kanji like those to this site?

I am always amazed at the roomies ability to read the various Kanji for body parts like 肚, without batting an eye. I try to make the point that we call this spelling badly in English, but she pays me no mind.

改竄 that second character would be easier to read if it used the 新字体鼡 for 鼠, like 猟る does。

Simplified Chinese just cheats as changes it to 窜 which loses the easy mnemonic of a 鼡 running into a 穴

Is that listed Kanji the main one for nickname? 'Casue the Japanese people I ask all say it's あだ名 only, and then they can read the various versions that actually turn up, so I never know which one is actually the main one.

I have no idea. I think I have seen 仇名 before but that's obviously ateji.

Nah, I think that with kanji like this you should learn them from what you're reading rather than from a list, but maybe I should anyway.

Yes anyone who says jouyou is enough to read is lying or ignorant. I have 3200+ kanji in my vocab deck according to Anki, including all the ones you posted, and I still see new ones all the time. I just added 8 new ones today in fact.

I wouldn't go that far. It's true that if you want 100% knowledge of everything then Joyo is not enough, but you can read with a lot less than that. Even if I hadn't looked up most of these kanji I still would have been able to read the dialogue without much trouble. The majority of the words had obvious meanings given the context plus knowledge of the common kanji in the compound. For instance, I knew that 改竄 and 貪欲 meant "revise" and "greed" through a combination of the context and the common kanji 改 and 欲.

I don't know if it is of any help but the first 30k words taken from the wordlist based on the "innocent novel analysis" contains 3200 kanji. Based on that same list, whose 30k words cover a 97% of the analyzed texts. I don't know if this info is of any practical utility (presence of furigana, proper names etc..).

One thing I find interesting about this game is that they consistently use 早い for "fast" as well as "early". This isn't the first game I've seen that does this. It's interesting that they would use things like 愉しむ, 淹れる, and 検める (and other non-Joyo kun yomi like 判る) but then not do the "normal" 速い vs. 早い that's on the Joyo list.

I have also found that it's fairly common that 早い is used like this, even when other variants are used for other words. I feel like 淹れる is used when writing お茶を淹れる more than not, so I don't agree with you on that one, but it feels kind of odd when people don't use variants for extra nuance, but simply to be different.
