tl;dr: see some free 日本語 books sorted by estimated easiness at http://www.readyourgrade.com

A lot of people were struggling to access books on Read Your Level due to Amazon.jp's geo-blocking. It turns out though that a number of the more popular books are out of copyright, and available on Aozora Bunko for free.

With this in mind, I've run my algorithm from Read Your Level through all the books on Aozora Bunko. While the books can be a little dated, I've filtered out anything which uses traditional characters. I've put 10 of the books with the easiest estimated grade (as well as some of the more popular free books over at amazon.com) online. I hope to merge this with all the kindle books from Read Your Level in the near future!

Hopefully you all find it useful! I'd love to hear about any other Aozora Bunko works that you'd like me to put online, or any suggestions.

That's pretty awesome!

I'm studying for N3 now and my reading comprehension practice is currently limited to NHK Easy News. I've been wonder "what next?" for a while now, and it seems like this site might be it.

Are you the owner of the site? My only feedback is that is that the kanji list is a bit confusing to me. Perhaps that visualization is trying to include too much information at once.

Also, when I clicked thru to read the first book (http://www.aozora.gr.jp/cards/001475/files/51073_53367.html) I wished that there was a way to turn off the furigana. I prefer to use rikaikun when I am unsure about a word.

I think that there's huge opportunity to help language leaners find books that are at their own level. It looks like this site can really help with that.

Thanks for the feedback, ariariari! I've had other feedback that the kanji list is a little confusing, it is something I'd like to spend some effort on fixing, but I still need to find the time to do it. Do you have any ideas about what would make it easier to understand?

Also, I totally agree that it would be nice if there was a way to turn off the furigana. While I'm the owner of Read Your Grade, the books are hosted on a different site, so I can't fix it immediately - but it is something I definitely want to tackle at some point. Being able to disable the furigana (or even just furigana under a certain level) would be amazing for reading practice.

I think that what's confusing is that the kanji visualization is showing 4 things simultaneously:

1. The kanji itself
2. The grade level
3. The number of occurences
4. A % (not sure what this means).

It's also not clear how the list is sorted. I would try putting something like this at the top of the kanji visualization:

Sort by: Grade level Occurences %

Basically, letting people poke around with the various metrics you created for the kanji in the text might help people understand the metrics better.

zaydana-san, thank you so much for creating this resource.

A link to it has been posted on the news(情報交換) section of the Kawaii Japanese Forums. If you make major changes or updates, feel free to post them there.

The same goes for other resource creators (or anyone else). If it is a resource that is useful to Japanese learners, feel free to post it there. Please post in Japanese, of course.
