Which Kindle Dictionary to Use? - Demesnenyx - 2015-04-04

Which J to E Kindle Dictionary do you guys use to read your native content? Are any of them reliable or am I better off using my laptop or phone? Would be nice if I could just have it all on my Kindle though.

On the Paperwhite, I use a cheap EDICT dictionary I bought for 500 yen. It's about as reliable as EDICT gets. If the definition seems odd, I double-check it with the dictionaries that come with the Paperwhite. There's a good 和英 dictionary in there. (Good, not great.) And a good 国語 dictionary in there, too. If I can't find what I'm looking for in there, I go to ALC and use their web-based Eijiro. It's good enough for reading content on the Kindle.

I won't use the Paperwhite as a dictionary outside of reading content on it, because it's horrible for looking up words outside of electronic books (like, say, when I'm reading real books and need to look up something). My electronic dictionary or my phone is MUCH faster. But for reading Kindle content, the Kindle is faster. There really isn't a good one-shot solution, unfortunately. Everyone kind of has to figure out what works best for them.

The Paperwhite has the Progressive J-E dictionary. Just click on "Cloud" (next to "Device" ) and look for a folder called Dictionaries.

Yeah, the Progressive isn't bad, and it's properly edited (and free). The only reason I use EDICT too is because it has some entries in it that aren't in the Progressive, which saves some time when reading.

That's one nice thing about the Paperwhite-- it's easy to buy extra dictionaries from Amazon, and relatively easy to switch dictionaries to check if the word you're looking for is in another one.

I just started using my Kindle again last night to read Harry Potter and settled on the 電子辞書 Japanese > English one. I have several. If I'm not happy with that one I can check others like the progressive. But that one seems to have more entries and generally I'm looking for volume over quality. I just want the dictionary to find something to help me out and the context helps with the rest.
