Unlimited Data Plan For Japanese Cellphones - animehunter123 - 2015-03-21

Hi,

Do you know if Yahoo or the other lessor known Cellphone Companies offer Unlimited Data? I currently have a old Docomo Plan and I stream video and everything through it to about 7GB per month. Unfortunately, Docomo no longer offers Unlimited Data, but I was wondering if there are any Japanese Cellphone Carriers that do?

If not, Ill just buy a used cellphone that has the same type of Sim card slot of Docomo and just stick with my plan. Ideas? I might buy this now instead: GALAXY Note SC-05D.

Softbank has パケット放題. http://www.softbank.jp/mobile/price_plan/smartphone/white-plan/packet/

The softbanks unlimited plan works exactly the same way as the Docomo one. Once you hit 7GBs in a month they soft-cap your speed to 128kbps.

animehunter, I looked at au to see what they offered. au doesn't offer an 'unlimited' plan like Docomo/Softbank/Yahoo does, where they softcap you.

au has tiered plans (http://www.au.kddi.com/mobile/charge/basic-charge/kakehodai-plan/) where you can pick a tier you think you'll stay in. You can see that the 13GB (+2GB on the campaign they have going now) for 1.2万 a month. You'll also note that when you go over your cap they'll charge you 754yen/GB.

If you know how much you use on average every month then the au one might be better in the long run if you want constant high speed. You'll just pay for it.

Thanks for the updates! Appreciate everyones help with this.

Wow... Man, its still over 1Man/Month, which is unfortunate. I was hoping there were at least some (Non-Family) plans that were 10Gig for around 7000 Yen Per Month

Thanks, Ill stick with my plan and just buy a used cellphone of the same model to replace it that. Thanks so much guys!

You might check into Wimax if you need that much mobile data. It's pretty easy to setup your phone to automatically connect to it over Wifi whenever you have it turned on.

How does wimax performance work on trains and cars. We have a long bus/car commute hence why I didnt want to give up my current contract which although is not 4G, but LTE performance

Wimax is pretty sensitive to being in the city because that is where the service areas are. If you are going anywhere even slightly remote it's a terrible idea.

One last tip, since you are already on Docomo, make sure you go to your My Docomo page and get all of your Docomo Wifi passwords and print them out or store them on your phone somewhere. Every Docomo data plan comes with free/unlimited wifi and these access points are everywhere including the Narita Express and Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo<->Osaka). This isn't a perfect solution but you might be able to do some your heavy usage on wifi instead of mobile.
