Rikachan on Firefox for Android - balloonguy - 2014-12-22

This is the canonical thread for Rikaichan for Android. The addon was previously discussed here.

Rikaichan for Android

This is a port of Rikaisama for Firefox for Android. Not all features are supported.

Download

Usage
From the menu, tap the Rikachan button so that it is checked. A message should appear saying Rikaichan is enabled. When you tap the first character of a word on a webpage, the Rikaichan popup will appear. Tapping on another word or tapping on the popup itself will make it go away. Double tapping, scrolling, and pinching still work and will not cause the current popup to disappear. Rikaichan will be enabled on all tabs. To disable Rikaichan, tap the Rikaichan button from the menu again.

Popup window
Unlike the normal Rikaichan popup, the popup contains four icons:

* ⇦: Tapping this will cause Rikaichan to move one character back. This is useful if, for example, you are looking up the word 理解 and accidentally tap 解 instead of 理. Tapping this arrow will make Rikaichan move a character back and will now correctly look up and display the definition of 理解.
* ⇨: Tapping this will cause Rikaichan go to the next word if possible. Rikaichan does not try very hard to find the next valid word, so this may not always work.
* ?: Saves the current term to a file. You must first set the filename in the options.
* ✂: Copies the current term to the clipboard.
You can also customize the format of how the term is saved/copied like in Rikaisama in the options (see Options below)

Tapping the popup will cause it to close, but tapping any of these icons will not.

Options
See http://mzl.la/MGnc0n for how to access the options

Known Issues
* It is not possible to select a link
* Tapping near a link causes the link to be pressed instead of the word
* The popup is not optimized for small screens

This addon is fantastic! Great work! However, is there a reason the name dictionary has been removed in the latest release?

Rikachan on Firefox for Android - balloonguy - 2015-01-11

Mostly because I didn't find it useful and it would double the download size. However, it can be added if you or others want it to be included.

Rikachan on Firefox for Android - mitch1981 - 2015-01-11

I find it very useful (for me) as I use it all the time for Firefox on the PC because I still struggle to read Japanese names. If it could be added, that would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for asking, but again, what you've done is absolutely amazing! Thank you so much.

Thank you very much for this! Despite the lack of the name dictionary, this app seems to work almost perfectly!

Great work with porting Rikaichan for Firefox to Android.

I also agree it'd be ideal to have the names dictionary back.

Hi,
I tried to install it on firefox for Android ver38 (OS: Android 5.0.2) but failed ... does it support android 5 or just the lastest firefox android ?

Rikachan on Firefox for Android - RawToast - 2015-05-30

I'll give this a try later. I guess it would be best to try this with the stable Firefox releases and not the beta version?

Rikachan on Firefox for Android - Mizunashi - 2015-05-30

Im using Firefox 38.0.1 from playstore so I dont think its beta version ...

Edit: I just checked with my tablet running android 4.4.4 and the same version of firefox. It seems working fine ! Wonder if the problem comes with 5.0.2 lolipop

Rikachan on Firefox for Android - RawToast - 2015-06-03

Just tried on Firefox 39 (Beta), all working fine! Smile

Does this only work with Android 4?

RE: Rikachan on Firefox for Android - balloonguy - 2016-04-23

The addon is now signed, you should now be able to install it. Sorry about that.

Thank you for this add-on! But it doesn't seem to work for me, I'm using v46.0.

RE: Rikachan on Firefox for Android - balloonguy - 2016-04-27

Think I got it this time, please try installing it again.

Yeah same thing happened to me but I just assumed I don't know how to use it yet Tongue

Hopefully third time's a charm. Download from https://github.com/ispedals/Rikachan-Android/releases . Try uninstalling the previous version and restarting Firefox before downloading and installing the new version.

RE: Rikachan on Firefox for Android - calico - 2016-05-01

It works!

Thank you so much, I've been using this add-on for reading Japanese, and it's super helpful!

RE: Rikachan on Firefox for Android - macaron11 - 2016-05-01

Everything seems to be working now, thank you so much!!

RE: Rikachan on Firefox for Android - sholum - 2016-05-19

I'm not sure if this is just me being an idiot or not, but I can't get the save function to work.

I've tried using a file in both the system memory as well as the external card, like so:
/storage/emulated/0/words.txt
/storage/extSdCard/words.txt
But in either case it claims that it's unable to find the file.
Does it only look in certain directories?

Other than this function, it's working fine.

Details:
Rikaichan for Firefox ver. 5.0
Phone: Galaxy S III (Android ver. 4.4.2 not rooted)
Message: "please set the file name in preferences"
Firefox version: 46.0.1

That was a bug, it is fixed in the latest version. Download from https://github.com/ispedals/Rikachan-Android/releases

Thanks! I can't sit at my computer for a while, so I've been trying to do everything I can from my phone.
