Let's share the top card in our decks! - Balaam - 2008-02-23

I know a few people are using decks for sentences and words. I thought it'd be cool if we saw what everyone was else was learning!

(My deck's actually empty at the moment, so this is the most recently added card.)

Sentence: テストは結構簡単でした。

Meaning: The test was pretty easy.
結構 Is used when the degree of something was higher than expected.

Reading: テストはけっこうかんたんでした。

(This particular sentence is from one of the early Japanese language books they give English teachers in Japan. You have to fill out a test and mail it off every week - unfortunately I didn't manage to do this very long and so only have some of the books :( Also it doesn't have kanji, so I'm filling that in myself、 So reader beware Big Grin)

Reading:
Quote:この しつげん の いきもの は あり と あらゆる ほうほう で えもの を あざむき ほしょく しよう と します
Meaning:
Quote:
This card is quite dense (they are usually much lighter). It's from HunterxHunter volume 1. In the "meaning" section I put: definitions of words in the sentence>definitions of words in the definitions>etc.
I don't bother with the definitions of the words that can be perfectly understood from the heisig keyword of the kanji.

Here is the first card I entered today:

Question:
あの民族紛争は容易に解決するまいと思うが、平和的解決への努力が必要だ。

Reading:
あのみんぞくふんそうはよういにかいけつするまいとおもうが、へいわてきかいけつへのどりょくがひつようだ。

Explanation:
~まい → ~ないだろう ≪否定の推量を表す≫

紛争 → 国と国、団体と団体などの間で、意見が合わずに争うこと。 (争う→あらそう)。

民族 → 同じ土地からおこった同じ先祖を持ち、言葉・文化・習慣などが同じである人々の集まり。

***********************
The sentence is from the 完全マスター 2級 grammar book
The definitions are from the チャレンジ小学国語辞典

When I review the card, I fail it if I mess up the reading or have to puzzle for too long over the meaning.

I hope this isn't too much info for one card...2 new words and a grammar point. But the readings aren't too bad since I already know words 市民、家族、戦争 that feature the same readings. And the grammar point isn't too tough.

johnzep,

I like those definitions a lot. I'm going to have to check out チャレンジ小学国語辞典 , luckily my local bookshop indicates they have it in stock.

I personally don't like to mix grammar and new vocab, but I think I let it slide a lot, especially if I know the readings for the new vocab.
