Do you add new cards during reviews? - jessem - 2014-10-30

I'm curious. The anki default seems to be showing you the daily "new" cards during the rest of your reviews. For a while I had the new cards/day set to 0, and I would do just my reviews, and then add new cards afterwards through the "custom study" option. I liked segregating things, and being able to focus on new content and give it some time, rather than lumping it in with my speed-reviews. But lately I've just used the new cards/day and have had my new cards and reviews mixed. I've found that I concentrate more on new cards, because at first I just assume they're old cards I've forgotten. But I also sometimes accidentally fail old cards, because I only glance at them and assume they're new, so I don't bother to concentrate. And then I get it wrong.

Anyway, my stupidity aside, when do you guys add your new cards? Any strategies?

I add them after reviews. That way I can add as many as I have time for and it's a bit of a happy treat actually to finish review and be able to add some new ones. The downside there is that I don't have the whole day to mentally process them, but it's not too bad of a problem. I've considered using a filtered deck to pull out all the cards that are due so that I can add new cards at the beginning of the day and maybe add a 6 hour learning step so I get one last impression before the next day.

I add them after reviews.
I noticed sometime last year that it was easier to remember the new cards if I separated them from the old cards, so I've done it that way ever since.
I never messed with filtered decks; I just set 'new cards' to zero before reviewing and then bumped it up when I got ready for new cards; it's not that much extra work for me, since I don't always add the same amount every day (if there's a big review spike or I'm really tired, I might only add ten or twenty, but I try to add thirty per day).

I study new cards mixed with my reviews. I have set a personal limit of studying 50 cards in the Core 6k deck everyday. Tomorrow, if I'm not mistaken, I'll have about 34 due cards to review. To complete my goal of 50, I'll first add 16 new cards through the Custom Study Session and study them mixed. If I leave the new cards for after I have reviewed everything, I feel like I won't be retaining the new cards, because I'll be pressing Soon (<1 min) all the time. Putting some review cards between gives me enough time to memorize the new ones.

I don't study really add new material while I'm reviewing, I don't think that's productive.

For example, for core6k what I do is, first I have all new cards suspended. Then I search for useful and interesting new cards. When I find a new i+1 card (everything was tagged using morphman) I notice if the new word have a strange kanji and if I can understand the grammar used in the sentence and I pay close attention to the meaning and the pronunciation. Then I do a Google search for an good image to represent the new word or sentence and put it on the card. Doing this I am sure that when I see the "new" card it is not new at all, so review is easy.

For grammar cards using cloze deletion I always use sentences from correction I get on lang-8 and I have the same effect that the card is not really new, so I can focus on reviewing.

The main benefit of adding new cards during your reviews is that learning mode's intervals are adhered to. In other words, the intervals between the reviews will not be as dictated in the settings. This 'may' harm retention, but if you study the cards beforehand (as you should) then the effects will be negligible.

I do prefer new cards at the end, but currently have Anki set to 'with reviews'.
