JLPT listening practice: numbers - cmertb - 2014-09-27 I was doing some JLPT listening for practice and realized that I am utterly unable to recognize numbers in real time. That includes times of day, months, years, any large amounts (especially the fact that large Japanese numbers are based on 10,000 rather than 1,000 doesn't help). Of course, when they're written, I can easily understand them, but it takes longer for me to process them than normal conversation speed would allow. As a result, I fail any questions that involve determining the order of events or relative magnitude of something. Is there any way I can practice recognition of numbers in speech? Right now all I can think of is use a random number generator and a Japanese text to speech app to create audio samples for me to practice with. But if there are options that don't require such effort, I would love to hear of them. JLPT listening practice: numbers - PotbellyPig - 2014-09-27 I have the same problem since I haven't practiced them much. You can try an app for your phone or tablet. For ios I just looked for and downloaded "Learn Japanese Numbers Fast". It has a listening flashcard section for a whole range of numbers. JLPT listening practice: numbers - sholum - 2014-09-27 You might try doing math problems using Japanese. Force yourself to use the Japanese numbers, reading all the terms as Japanese. Of course, this would be more efficient with basic operations resulting in numeric values, but if you don't mind relearning the terminology for all the math you know... Or flash cards, but math seems like it'd be more fun, since you could also challenge yourself to do basic operations more quickly (learn a bunch of perfect squares, extend your times table, etc). JLPT listening practice: numbers - nickoakden - 2014-10-02 Same problem here. Even if I'm listening to the news and I *know* today's date is coming, it's still ni-sen-juu-blahblahblahblahwhat? I can't help you in any way, but I do support your quest! JLPT listening practice: numbers - yogert909 - 2014-10-03 Same here. To make matters worse, when I was in grade school, I wasn't interested in dates, times and proper names, so I just processed them as blablabla. That habit still hampers my ablity to remember numbers. Just off the top of my head, you could take a big deck that includes audio, like core, and search for numbers and tag as "number" cards. You would only need to search 9 digits(0-9). Then you could make a filtered "listening comprehension" deck which contains all of the sentences containing numbers. However I imagine even in a large deck like core10k it wouldn't take long to memorize the number sentences. Another thing you might try is practice listening ONLY for numbers. Japanese news programs should feature a lot of numbers and you could ignore everything else and just process the numbers... |
