Project: Tadoku Media Guide to 30 Manga from Manga Got a Chance - lumiina - 2014-09-17

***Update*** We're looking for a complete beginner who's new to Japanese and still learning kana! ***Update***

Manga Got a Chance (http://mangag.com/) is a free, manga website with a lot of high quality content, even some that have been turned into tankoban later on.

A team of Japanese learners and I are pulling together a guide rating the difficulty of thirty titles from this website. The more people who help the better! Official ratings will be based on the ratings given by at least one beginner, one intermediate and one advanced learner and posted live so that the guide can become useful right away.

You can see the list of titles we're working on here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LLFlAzehZiEIZCUgDMT0MuVRA0Drmockk_EosvtgOEc/edit?usp=sharing. Ratings are based on Japanese Level Up's level system (japaneselevelup.com/what-level-are-you).

Official ratings have a minimum range, with the lowest level being the minimum level required for intensive reading and the highest level being the minimum required for extensive reading. Titles without official ratings (and therefore still need to be rated) have a predicted difficulty based on just a glance through the manga. While the predicted rating may be way off, it should give you an idea of what manga to start off with for the rating process.

Anyone who's interested is free to join! We are doing this on a Google Plus community. Feel free to comment with your profile link, username or email here, or email it to me privately if you prefer to do so (saori.no.email[at]gmail[dot]com).

Since Manga Got a Chance is such a big website with so many titles to choose from, the goal of this is to help other learners know where to start by pointing out titles at their level. Another goal of mine is to find a title that's as reader friendly as よつばと! (a manga that's commonly recommended to start out with, good for all levels).

This post has been updated since we've gone through some changes!

We have five active members right now who have contributed to the ratings and one official rating so far. We are looking for a complete beginner as well! Anyone who cannot put together sentences yet on their own and is still learning kana.

And of course, anyone who is interested in joining is welcome, no matter the level!

lumiina, thanks for posting the update, I didn't catch the first post and am getting up to speed on what you've done and what's available. Great resource!

One small suggestion: put each manga in the Google Doc on its own page. After some scrolling I get confused whether the image splash refers to the text beneath it or above it. (As a Web2.0 nerd, I feel sad that due to the state of web technology, content creators like you still find word processing tools like Google Docs to be the best way to create such valuable, educational content. Prose.io (youtube tutorial:
) and its ilk must still have a ways to go :/)

Thank you for the feedback!

I am actually going to create a website for this guide, and expand to rating other content with my team as well after this guide is over. At the moment, the team and I are still thinking of a name for the website before we can create it. It will definitely not be on Google Docs.

Each manga would have a page of their own and would be categorized by tags. I would like to figure out how I could make it so that you could check multiple tags at the same time to narrow down your search, instead of just the ability to click on one tag. So for instance, say I had a tag for levels "1-10", and a tag for "shojo". You could check them both to find shojo titles around your level. I would also like to figure out how to make it so the user could search for manga by entering a numeral value of their choice, such as "12-15".

So the website would kind of be like a database.
