Kanji dictionary - cophnia61 - 2014-09-11

After the switch I made to "kanji -> meaning" I noticed often those meanings reveal themselves of little help in remembering the meaning of a compound. Often I simply remember the word as a whole, without worrying about the meaning of each single kanji in the compound. But it happens some times the meaning doesn't stick, so I find helpful to look at each kanji in the compound and see the logic behind them.
But often this doesn't works because the meanings I'm learning in Anki are those taken from jisho.org and similar, and they are too context-less so I find it difficult to remember all them and when I drill them in Anki I simply remember what it's supposed to be the main meaning, but often it is not.

For example:

Quote:連絡 = to contact; to get in touch etc..

連 = clique; connect; gang; join; lead; party; take along;

絡 = coil around; entwine; get caught in;
When I do Anki and it show me 連 I give a general meaning, often the keyword I remember from RtK, in this case "take along", while for 絡 I give "entwine" and pass. So when I learned 連絡 the meaning was not immediately obvious or, in other words, the meanings I learned with my "kanji -> meaning" deck are not so useful when I have to learn the meaning of a compound.

Yes, I know "connect + entwine" can be easily interpreted as "to get in touch" but the fact is those meanings by itself are too context-less and I end with a blurry memory of the kanji meaning. Like for 絡 I remember the image of a spool or bobbin.

On the other hand I find very useful the explanations given in the goo dictionary:

Quote:連: 1 つながり続く。結びつなぐ。「連歌・連繋(れんけい)・連結・連合・連鎖・連続・連隊・連帯・連邦・連盟・連絡/一連・関連」

絡: 2 つながる。つなぐ。「絡繹(らくえき)/短絡・脈絡・連絡」
With an explanation and not single words, plus example compounds, I find this more effective.

Another example, for the word 連中:

Quote:7 仲間うち。「社中・女中・連中(れんちゅう・れんじゅう)」
Just reading this definition has made the meaning of 連中 simpler to remember.

and for 注意:

Quote:注: 2 ひとつ所に集中させる。「注意・注視・注目/傾注」
Obviously this is not something you memorize with Anki, with all the secondary meanings etc.. so my question is, do you use those kanji dictionaries and, if yes, when and how do you use them? Just the first time you learn a word? Only for the words you struggle to remember? For the words you fail in Anki? There are english alternatives with meanings and example words? I've given a look to "the kodansha dictionary" but I've found it less effective than the goo dictionary.

A last question ._. I've found this in a page of ajatt:

Quote:FRONT

BACK

backbone, spinal column

I tried to search the same kanji on goo but the explanation is way less detailed than this. So I asked from where he take it but I see the same question was done other times starting from 2010 and ending in 2013, but those comments never received a reply. So anyone knows from where he has taken that definition?
