Does anyone on this forum have one? Or at least seen one and played around with it? What's it like to use one? I know vaguely from reading about them on the internet that you move a big handle around until you point something at the right kanji in a tray and then do something to make the kanji strike the ribbon.
Apparently they were so slow to use that most people didn't bother with them.
I've toyed with the idea of trying to acquire one, just for the "fun" of owning one and trying to use it to type kanji.

Nope, but from videos it seems like it might be fun to try! They sort of look like mini-printing presses. I bet it wasn't much fun for the people who had to resort to either it or handwriting though...Can you imagine how long it would take if if you needed to write like this every time you needed to write an email?

Holy crap. As I was reading your description, I was thinking hey, I'd like to have one too. I'll put it up on a shelf as a conversation piece. Until I found out it would need it's own room!
But that gets me thinking, it might be cool to have some kanji cold type.

Wow, that's...really something.
Fun fact, the typewriter in the video didn't come out until almost 1930. About 50 years after European typewriters and 50 years before the emergence of the personal computer...
