I realize there may be a very literal translation, but does anyone know how Japanese people would use it if talking about say, the soil on the moon, in the same way we would say 'moon dust'?

According to Weblio it is げつじん. Seems pretty obscure though, can't find it in any of my other dictionaries, but if you google 月塵 and げつじん together you get a fair number of hits.

What I'm looking for is an almost whimsical version of dust.

Lunar soil is what I'm getting at, but when we say moondust, it's almost like when we say fairy dust.

So, how would Japanese say 'dust' as in fairy dust?


I refuse to believe they use the word for dirt/filth/ and trash, like in the first relpy. That's a far different thing than soil. Thank you for your input though.

Can you give us a complete example sentence with "moon dust" so we can see exactly the context you're using the term in?

In the dictionary, moon dust = lunar dust = 月塵.
Fairy dust is 妖精の粉.
I don't know if anything like 月粉 even exists or is understandable.
Lunar soil is 月面土壌.

That's okay, 塵 (じん) as a word does not mean any of those things, nor is it being used as a word. Consider the word 後塵.

Does it need to be "moon" dust? 星屑(hoshikuzu) or "star dust" is used in the more whimsical way I think you want, and it seems more commonly used.

ムーンダスト! Don't dismiss katakana, especially if you're looking for something in the line of "fairy dust". Writing it in kanji might give the impression that it's something more technical than artistic. I bet that's the word a professional translator would use. ...but not us! We're kanji lovers Wink

About 月の粉, it shows beauty products on google... after all it's really moon "powder". Also in Harry Potter, they use 煙突飛行粉 for that chimney powder.
