PDF Reference of RTK 1,2,3 + On Yomi readings. - oscarj94 - 2014-07-18

Hi, I just made a PDF Referenece of all RTK Kanjis, including On Yomi readings in Katakana, Hiragana and Romaji, and translations to English. Perfect for printing (~80pgs. / ~60 for RTK1)!

This is based entirely on Kanjidic project (http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/kanjidic2/), except for the hiragana and romaji translations (which I implemented), and was made possible through some programming.

Bear in mind I don't know that much of japanese myself, and that is exactly why I made this reference, so if there is anyhting wrong or any additon you want me to make, feel free to tell.

The information shown in every kanji is as follows:
1. RTK frame number
2. Number of Strokes
3. Grade at which it is learnt (>8 are Jinmeiyou, for use in names)
4. Kanji
5. Katakana (Hiragana) (Romaji)
6. Menaing

There are two versions: one with the original RTK numbering and the other with the 6th edition numbering, so that everyone can use it!

Due to a petition, I'm adding another download, which contains: KANJI + KUN YOMI + ON YOMI
Kun will be in Hiragana and On in Katakana.
The number of readings of each has been limited to the 4 most important (so that everything fits) and everything is just a bit tinier Smile

EDIT 2:
I have updated the links so that the PDFs now display japanese characters properly (previously the font I was using was displaying the chinese version of the charcaters, which is mostly Ok, but in some cases there were discrepancies)

Wow this is nice, now I can review the kanji individually now. But it would be much more useful if the kun yomi is also included. You can remove the romaji pronunciation to make more space for the kun readings.

Another question: the font for the kanji, is it by any chance a Chinese font? I ask because 殖 (#874 in the 6th edition version) is rendered per this Chinese reference (see top-left image). I made this quick image showing how its rendered in different Japanese fonts and a Chinese font on my Mac, exact same character:

Noto from Google (Japanese and Chinese, and every other language I can imagine) is freely available as a download, as is M+ (Japanese only). Maybe in the next round of updates, switching to a Japanese font might be worthwhile?

As aldebrn points out, the font is not suitable for Japanese. Checking the 600s for example (6th Ed.), the following are incorrect: 604, 642, 643, 672, 673, 684, 697, 699.

I have fixed the font issue by changing the font to a japanese one. It took me quite a while to find one I liked, but I hope everything is fine now.

Regarding the missing translations issue, it has to do with the source I got the dictionary from. There isn't much I can do about it myself due to my lack of knowledge.
However you can fill them in yourself (there aren't that many, and it seems to happen only in RTK6 or characters past ~2000.
Alternatively, if someone wants to compile a list I will be happy to include the translations.
Something like:
Character1-translation1, translation2
Character2-translation1, translation2
etc.
Also, if there are any translations you want me to improve, just make a list the same way.

Looks nice! Which font is this? Out of curiosity, could you describe which alternatives you looked at and how you settled upon this one?

I now understand, KANJIDIC2 is different from WWWJDIC. I see that though the latter sports meanings for kanji like 肘 the former does not. How interesting.

Final question: how are you generating this? The ReportLab Python pdf generation library? Or jsPDF?

Yeah! The article I read about that said Google and Adobe "cooperated" here, but they produced two separate fonts, Google's Noto Sans and Adobe's Han Sans? Not quite sure why there are two free open-source fonts and how they differ...

I just wanted it to have a kind of natural look (so sans-serif fonts didn't do it for me), and also I wanted it to be as easy to read as possible, so that's why I didn't choose a brush-like font. Besides, RTK uses a similar font.

Well, I go kind of the cheap way. I use java to read the dictionary and generate the 4 HTMLs, and then I print them as a PDF from Chrome (which conveniently remembers last settings used). I didn't feel like lerning to use new libraries for such a simple thing (but hey, don't tell anyone).

You should totally throw the resulting HTMLs on the web somewhere. (Github Pages e.g. will host it for you for free.)

Here is the link http://www.mediafire.com/download/aet8e1p2qinowby/kanji.zip in case anyone wants to tweak the style or something like that. It also includes an extra style (a squared one). You will need to extract the font and the htmls in the same folder for the font to display properly.
