I have too many decks apparently. - learningkanji - 2014-07-07

Anki displayed a message that I have a lot of decks and that it might not be good because it's easier to answer knowing the content of the deck. How would I combine decks together and if I do, how do I deal with words with the same exact sound when practicing listening?

You can 'drag and drop' decks on top of each other on the default anki screen. That way you can group your decks. So instead of
Deck A
Deck B
Deck C
you can order it as
Deck B
--Deck A
--Deck C

You can then click on 'Deck B' to review cards from all those decks, or on 'Deck A' to review only cards from 'Deck A'. So this approach let's you keep your cards organized and solves the anki complaint about a lack of diversity. I like it, because it let's me keep track of the origin of my words while mixing up my reviews.

With regard to your second question, I'd say the only thing that can help you in this case (and also in the real-life setting) is context. If possible, don't study those words without context such as sample sentences as it'll be very frustrating otherwise.

So if I click on Deck B, the order of cards could be: Card from Deck A, C, B, B, A, B, C, B, C, A, etc. It wouldn't do all B then all A then all C right?

Good question! Intuitively I'd have expected the first scenario and almost replied that that's the case. However, I got curious and checked the actual behavior. Unfortunately it seems that your latter scenario is actually true, so all B's first, then A's then then C's.

I guess I just never noticed as my grouped decks are all very similar. Thanks for helping me notice that. Unfortunately I didn't find an option to 'properly mix' the reviews, so I guess it's back to square one. Sorry for that.

You can may a filter deck for is:due and it will pull out everything randomly

Hmm I tried looking it up and it seems you have to just move all cards from Deck A and C to B. It was recommended to tag the cards if you want to keep track of them but I've never tagged cards before.

Sorry, I'm not too sure what that is or how to do that. I haven't used many Anki features besides the general ones.

From the menu go to Tools->Create Filtered Deck ...
Continuing my above examle, you'll have to enter "is:due deck:"Deck B"" into the 'Search' field. Set the limit to some high number and set the next field to 'Random'. Also keep the checkbox to reschedule the cards based on answers in the filtered deck checked.

This will create a new deck containing the cards that matched the search terms (in this case cards from decks ABC that are due today). From my quick check, it seems as if you'll get the desired behavior of randomly chosen cards. However, I'm not sure if the filtered deck is dynamically updated, or if you'll have to re-filter manually every day.

I don't get why that message is even built into the software. Making your decks more confusing by mixing card types together just makes the answers harder without providing actual value in terms of learning the material.

Keep your decks separate, unless joining them is a simplification (because the cards in the two decks are of the same type - then there's no reason to have two separate decks).

That's correct and sucks. There is no intention to change the functionality, as the makers believe you should put all your related notes under one deck (e.g. one for sentences, one for subs2srs, etc).

It really undermines the whole point of subdecks, which handle many approaches. I ended up using subdecks for new cards, before tossing them into one big deck at the end of each month in order to get randomised reviews.

This is a nice solution Smile

Quote:you can order it as

This will still give you the message. I place all my 'disabled' decks (that I may wish to use later) under a deck named disabled. I eventually got the message after adding enough sub-decks.

You don't get that message until you have 25 decks (including the default deck, which you can't see if it's empty). What do you need 25 decks for? Are you learning five languages, each with a parent deck and four card types or something?

The decks I have that are adding a lot to the number of decks are the Japanese Core Listening Sentence Vocab + Images Step Decks. Once I finish one, I download the next and so on. There are 10 steps for Core 2000 and now I'm working on Core 6000 which will have 12 steps (almost done Step 1).

Alongside with those I have a Tae Kim grammar deck, Core2k6k optimized, 2 Yotsubato decks I haven't started yet, my own sentence deck, and a few miscellaneous ones.

In terms of that, I was thinking of merging Core 2000 Steps 1-10 all together if that's a good idea.
