JLPT: copying answers down for future reference allowed? - jasberg - 2014-07-05

I'm taking the JLPT in Tokyo tomorrow and noticed that in the past the answers have been posted online well before the results are officially posted. I tried searching around, but couldn't find any definitive information about if
A) it's against the rules to write down your answers on anything other than the official answer sheet. I reviewed the rules, and it doesn't seem to be against the rules if you just write a, b, c, etc., since you're not copying down test content.
B) for people who have copied their answers down for later reference, what are people writing there answers down on? Are you allowed scrap paper?

That's a risky business! The UK JLPT people sent me an email three days ago entitled "About misconducts at JLPT". It said if I so much as sneeze, they're allowed to break both of my legs.

You're not allowed scrap paper, either. The only things you're allowed to have on your desk are: the question paper, the answer paper, a pencil, an eraser, a sharpener and an analog watch.

I'd say that "It's technically not against the rules!" won't be a defence they'll really listen to. If they catch you writing strings of ABCDs on anything, you're out.

(I do, however, feel your pain. We have to wait 2-3 months to find out the results of a machine-graded test?! It's just torture.)

Just wear a pair of spy glasses with a little camera built in to record you taking the test.

i can't seem to find the post from last year, but it seemed a lot of people had copied their answers down during the test and could then check them as soon as the answers were published on a website in China. So, I assumed it wasn't too big of a deal. I'd like to hear from anyone who has done it in the past, or knows what is allowed and what isn't.

Do it and tell us how it went.

You aren't allowed to take any of the materials out of the room with you including what you answered. I can't imagine what you would use to copy down the answers as they are not going to allow you to have scrap paper or anything.

The Chinese that did it probably memorized their answers and checked later. But trying to write your answers down to check later is a good way to get your results thrown out.

well, the test seems to always leak in china the following day of the JLPT. People weren't memorizing their answers, and it wasn't the Chinese, it was a bunch of people on this forum that had just copied down their answers and were able to check them once the leaked test was posted. It seemed like copying down your a,b,c,d choices may be fairly common practice based on the responses I read last year before the actual results were posted (i wish i could find the forum post). At any rate, I'm not too concerned about being able to check my answers, so I think I'll just play it safe.

i ended up not copying down the answers. I suppose I could have copied them down on the envelope they made everyone put their cell phone's in, since it seemed like they weren't very strict about collecting that, and if you were caught writing on it you'd only get a yellow card, but it didn't seem to be worth the effort / risk.. I'd be curious to hear if anyone did copy their answers down, and how they went about it.

now begins the long wait for the results. congrats to everyone who took the test today.

You can copy down your answers?
I just had a vague memory of how my answer sheet looked like/problem questions and checked them over the Chinese site.

When I took the test last year I wrote down my answers in code on the back of my ID form (since they let us take that out of the test). I felt like a criminal doing it though - but damn if it isn't worth being able to check your answers the next day! I think most people would choose that over waiting two months.

On a side note, I found there to be some discrepancies in the various answers that were posted to Chinese sites. You often have to take them with a grain of salt because I'm pretty sure that quite a few had glaring mistakes (this is for the December N1).
