I'm at the beginner's stage, having done both RTK and Tae Kims Grammar; currently working my way through 2k Core.
And I've been wondering, which books (or authors) can you suggest for my level?

(The reason I'm asking about books in aozora bunko is because I don't have any money to spare...but if you could direct me to sites where I can download light novels for free, I'd be very grateful.)

Honestly, I don't think it's useful at your level to read anything on Aozora. I don't think you'll be able to find anything that isn't a horrible slog.

Give Miyazawa Kenji's short stories a try, if you want to prove it to yourself. He wrote for children, but I'd still consider him more difficult to read than quite a few contemporary authors.

Read NHK Easy News.

There's an innocent books recommendation thread. It might just answer both your questions.

Then there's also manga.

It's gonna be above your level, but I found that the 100物語 was fun to read, rikai-sama, when I was a little bit above that level.

This versions nice because it also has voices attached.

100物語 is basically a collection of ghost stories.
