As in the light novel 「バカとテストと召喚獣」
From the Wisdom dictionary on the iPad, I could pull out that 召喚 meant to summon and 獣 is like a 化け物, but I couldn't quite put together the meaning; skype the gf for the definitive definition, and got this:
召喚獣（しょうかんじゅう）とは、何らかの要因において、他の場所から召喚される生物の総称。実在の生物に限らず、空想上や伝説上の生物（幻獣）、時には人や神をも含む場合がある。
Excellent! Got the 読み方 and a definition that any geek should understand! Hahaha
Even though this kind of vocabulary will never show up on the JLPT, the image will certainly help me remember 召喚, a much more likely candidate.

anyhow, my mnemonic is now 召喚獣=Pokémon
