Raw manga with translations to practice - droidjv - 2014-06-03
Hello guys, I'm new here so nice to meet you all.
I'm doing a small project to help me practice Japanese and I wonder if maybe someone who gets interested in the idea is willing to help.

At first my plan was to read raw manga with the translated version side by side, but then I thought about making something that I could re-use and ended up doing this:

How it works:
I wanted to make things as portable as possible, so everything works with folders and xml files that contain coordinates and translations, this way I can change the interface or even make a desktop app and re-use the folders I already have.
Clicking on the image takes you to the next page, and right clicking to the previous one, I only have chapter 1 done as it's only a test and I don't even know if that manga is licensed or not.

That looks like a good program; some of those translations aren't very good, though. Is that a fan translation? Most of them are OK for following the story and getting the general idea but for using as a learning source it might not be so good.
For instance, on page 13 that you linked:
ま 寝てるだけだし いいよね
Their translation is "I'll rest a bit anyway", but what this means is "Eh, I'm just going to rest, so it's OK [that no one is here]."
それにしても 綺燐たら
Even so, Kirin...geez... (that's hard to translate, but name+たら indicates frustration with the person. I didn't read the whole manga so I don't know exactly what this line means.)
I read a few more pages and every page had multiple bubbles that were acceptable just for reading the story but weren't good translations of the Japanese (and in a few places they were wrong even just for reading the story, I saw several bubbles where the translation had the opposite meaning of the Japanese or where the translator clearly had no idea what was going on with the grammar and just guessed based on the context and the meaning of the words in the sentence.)

I wanted a short manga to make the mock up and found that one and as I was working with it I realized that something wasn't right, after checking the translator notes found this:
"It's my first time translating, so there's bound to be some errors, but I think I did pretty good."
whoops guess he didn't as good as he thought. Thanks yudantaiteki for your comment, now that I have something working I'll pick a decent translation, do you know of any unlicensed manga with a good translation? I'd appreciate it.

Link to live version removed on first post as I took down the mock-up. Now that it's done I'll be picking up a different manga (Yotsubato I think) for starters.

Sorry, I couldn't be of more help because I don't read scanlations so I don't know what translations are good and what aren't. I still think it seems like a good program.
