聞かせ vs 聞せて - LX2010 - 2014-05-23
I chanced upon the two while browsing a dictionary and got confused. Is there a difference in meaning & nuance between 聞かせ and 聞せて？
From a dictionary:
何か面白い話を聞かせてください. Tell us an interesting story.
ご意見をお聞かせください. Please let us know what you think.
Makes me wonder if there are other phrases that can have the て omited. Hope you guys over here can help me out. Thanks!

The second one is more polite. It uses the お + verb stem grammar, which is for honorific speech, while the first one is normal polite speech. This form exists for all verbs with some exceptions.

I looked up 聞かす and it seems that 聞かせ is its imperative form. Is it true to say that the phrase, ご意見をお聞かせください, exhibits its honorific nature as 聞かせ acts on the speaker + is spoken by the speaker, and thus exalts the listener?
Is there a difference in nuance between the 2 below? I can't seem to understand the difference adding or removing て would make.

聞かせ here is not imperative, it's the stem (-masu form without the -masu) of 聞かせる, which is the causative of 聞く -- "let us hear."
お + verb stem + ください is the pattern. You can't use て here.

Googling "をお聞かせてください"" will give you plenty of hits which suggests that even Japanese people get it wrong.

Hmm I just heard this phrase used in conversation from an anime:
Character A: ほらみほ、お食べて
Am I right to say that the above is grammatically wrong, but since Character A's a teenager and the phrase was used in a casual, informal context, its alright?
I read that when お is attached to a verb, the whole phrase becomes like a noun. This renders it incorrect to attach て to it, such as in the previous case. Is that correct?
I really ran out of sources to look this up. Tae Kim's Guide and a bunch of other Japanese grammar guides don't seem to touch on this, "A dictionary of basic Japanese grammar" doesn't give the rules to it either. Are there better books or guides for stuff like this that I'm missing out?

I think you either misheard it, or for some reason the character is intentionally using strange Japanese.
