what kind of documentaries? some good ones i saw were 記憶が失われた時(about a guy who loses his short-term memory) and 新しい神様(about japanese ultra-nationalist music scene, among other things).

there are a lot of good japanese documentaries, though, you need to be more specific about what you're looking for.

Great one! I tried doing a google video search for both NHKスペシャル and NHK BS世界のドキュメンタリー. Lots of good stuff there.

I'd be interested in nature documentaries, specifically. Foreign stuff dubbed in Japanese is fine too, as long as it's not the stuff everyone's seen on Discovery and the BBC.

there's a bunch of nature documentaries on asian dvd club, without subtitles(or only japanese).
also, miyazaki produced and isao takahata directed documentary called the story of yanagawa's canals

From what I've seen so far, the Japanese used in the course that's currently available isn't too difficult and there are subtitles available for people like me who suck at listening and need a script to practice with.
Of course, it'll help a lot if you already know something about the time period.

It's an extensive list. I watched several titles online and downloaded others via torrent and I absolutely loved them. The ones I chose from are the first 50 sorted by the MOVIEmeter. You'll have more luck finding ones that have posters on IMDb than ones that don't... More available on Western websites and torrent trackers Smile

Really? Maybe I've just been watching it for so long that I don't notice. All the US broadcasts from Discovery's and History's networks turn to discussing aliens and reality series staring junk shops and dumpster divers, and National Geographic's channel has become dedicated to teaching people how to create their own drug empires, complete with underground bunkers, How It's Made has continued to be a consistent light in the dark realm of 'educational' television.

That's a long-winded way of saying "I can't stand to watch most any television shows anymore and How It's Made is one of the few shows left on television that I'll watch."

Also, it's one of the best things to play when you wake from a nightmare, if you ask me. I don't know about y'all, but when I wake from a nightmare, going back to sleep without some soothing sounds just puts me right back in it (or in a worse one where the beast is inside the room instead of outside the door; did you know that the idea of pain can be just as horrifying as the real thing when you're in a dream?)

A group of people that pretty much upload every show Discovery, National Geographic and History do. They used to be HD and dubbed but three days ago they deleted everything and now it looks like they do standard definition (not like it matters).
Google it and you should find their stuff. It's scattered but it's out there.

there's 情熱大陸. it's 20 minutes so it doesn't go that deep in but still entertaining. Check out episodes that feature famous people that you're interested in.

Ever heard of Begin Japanology ??

I just started this documentary series (6 seasons, rated 8.7/10 on IMDb) and it's really really interesting... Basically, all things Japanese. The episode I watched was about "Bento" and it has dual audio "JP/EN" making it AWESOME.

Incomplete season 1,2 and complete seasons 3,4,5,6 are available on Asia Torrents. If you can't join Asia Torrents now, check the reply with the FTP server link on this page, lots of episodes there !
