How Many College Credits Should RTK Be Worth? - Nukemarine - 2008-02-07 Fairly simple question. My suggestion is 5 credit hours in foreign language studies. I assume that a 1 credit hour class means you are in class for 1 hour a week for 16 weeks. In addition, you'll study/do assignments for 2 hours outside of the class for every 1 hour. So a 1 credit hour class means 48 hours (round up to 50) of learning/study time to that subject. Nothing stretching here as I've heard this numerous times. Now, I make a big assumption here that a person will average 5 to 10 minutes per kanji. So let's say 7.5 minutes of study per kanji to get all 2042 down to an 80% recall rate or higher. That's 255 hours so therefore 5 credit hours. I would think the college would offer the credit only as a result of 1 to 3 tests. Recognition of Keyword to kanji (1 keyword, 6 kanji choices), Kanji to keyword (1 kanji, 6 keywords), and stroke order (kanji given with 6 choices with multiple stroke numbers). Yes, I wrote this as a bit of a laugh at first. However, thinking a bit deeper there may be some validity to this. For now, the benefits of RTK are felt later on (College courses or JLPT and DLAB tests), but it would be nice if a direct recognition can be had from an accredited university. |
