I looked up some info about the Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar online and it's over 600 pages. Then there's the Intermediate and Advanced dictionaries which I assume are equally as lengthy? How much of that grammar is necessary to know to understand native material well?

This depends on the type of the native material. For NHK “NEWS WEB EASY” you will be fine with grammar from DOBJG. The 普通のニュース will likely go beyond DOBJG. And for some regular prose/novels/essays you may find that even DOAJG is not exhaustive.

Yeah, depends on the material.
Reading children's novels - most aimed at middle-level primary school kids and below I don't really have to think about the grammar much at all, usually. I imagine it's all stuff that would count as 'basic' given it's encountered in pretty much everything.
Novels aimed at upper levels of primary school can have some pretty tangled sentences which can be difficult to parse and structures that I just don't know. Mostly it's okay though.
Some manga you can get away with the absolute basics.

Don't stress grammar too much, I think. Like vocabulary - once you know enough you can work out other stuff by context, and you need to know a lot less grammar to do that than you do vocabulary.

I've been reading light novels and as far as I see, most of the grammar through N1 level will show up in them. I've gone through Kanzen Master N2 and N1. I also supplemented with extra items in the three Dictionaries of B/I/A Grammar. There are a good number of items in the 3 dictionary books that are not in Kanzen Master and visa-versa. I'm also adding some more from web sources. Although light novels are probably aimed at middle school and high school students you'll see a good coverage of the grammar points. I think the division into N3, N2, N1 and Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced has to do with more with the frequency they occur than with the level of the text they appear in after a certain point.
