500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - sue144 - 2011-11-03 今晩は やった!!! Just did 505 frame this morning :) It's been such a chore but finally starting to enjoy it. Seeing progress is also motivating. 最後まで頑張ります! おめでとうございます皆さん! 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - lardycake - 2011-11-05 I'm back onto frame 525 today after just one week. But I had done over half the book about a year ago, somehow I remember quite a few even after all this time with no reviews at all... This time I will be completing it! Aiming for 50 a day, the main aim is to be complete by the new year. Then new years resolution is upping the weight at the gym and SRSing a ton of sentences. 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - domokun1134 - 2011-11-10 Just got up to 1000 this morning. Only took two years.
500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - tatercat - 2011-11-10 Just hit 547 in the new edition, the end of part 2, and just 3 frames under 1/4th the way done. I'm doing my best to tear through the book as fast as I can, and I got to here in 3 days of work (4 in total; I accidentally took a break yesterday...) (mind you, I've gone through the whole of RTK before, so a lot of things are still very familiar, despite the year-long break). When I sit down and get to work, it's hard to stop. I'll hopefully have it done within the next two weeks. 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - cdan198 - 2011-11-11 Just finished frame 500 . I am seriously burning through the kanji now (~40-50 a day). I signed up for the sight on Oct 26th, but I didn't really start studying seriously until about 2 weeks ago. This site rocks! Sure beats the hell out of using handmade flash cards, and even Anki (since I can go through my cards anywhere on my phone!). I make sure that I study at least 40 cards every day, and then complete all my reviews once they pop up. I'm hoping to have around ~1000 done by Thanksgiving, and the first Heisig book complete by Christmas. I know these are pretty lofty goals, but I know I can do it! 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - haveheart2 - 2011-11-11 500 frames in on my 4th stab at doing it from beginning to end! hope to be done before the new year. motivations at an all time high! (but that might be from all the coffee i've been drinking )oh and my retention rate is in the mid 90s. 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - lardycake - 2011-11-14 9 days since my last post. Reached the half way point, 1,000 characters. I'm at about 250 reviews per day, so it's basically 1 hour learning the new characters and just over 1 hour on reviews each day (I always write the characters out). But that is spread out a bit due to irritability and distractions. My brain feels like it bleeding after the reviews but I shall plough on, content in the knowledge that it's only 1k chars till no more additions. Then bring on the new year and sentence mining. 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - domokun1134 - 2011-11-15 250 reviews a day?! How do you manage that.... I'd die. 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - lardycake - 2011-11-15 domokun1134 Wrote:250 reviews a day?! How do you manage that.... I'd die.Yeah, it's a bit of a pain at the moment. http://i.imgur.com/TJqwt.png is my deck stats. I am murdering myself physically in the gym and mentally doing tons of kanji, up until new year when I will "relax" into a more sustainable method. 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - tatercat - 2011-11-16 Just hit 1205 (in the new edition, so I've still got 1195 left to go). I could've gotten here a few days later, but I had to take some time for mental health, and didn't get much studying done other than keeping up with reviews. I also got put behind a day when my anki deck got corrupted; fortunately, I had a backup from the day before. I'm going to try to finish before I go home for Thanksgiving, which means I have about 6 days, but I'm going to try to be faster. ETA: Hit 1650 a half hour ago. 75% done! As suspected, my friends all going home for Thanksgiving meant that I had a lot of free time; I can almost certainly be done by this time tomorrow. 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - TheSlyPig - 2011-11-18 I hit 500 yesterday! I'm doing the 6th edition, so still not quite 1/4th of the way done, but well on my way. I'm seriously excited about this. Even though I know I have been improving in overall 日本語 over the last few months, the progress is hard to gauge. With RTK, though, I'm now seeing new 漢字 that I learn all over the place, it's seriously noticeable progress. I honestly just feel more motivated than ever.I usually aim for 10 new kanji per day, plus or minus a few depending on my motivation that day, plus about an hour of reviews and writing. It's slower than most, but I think it will really boost my long-term retention. At this rate I should be done in about 5-6 months. Just fine for me. ![]() 頑張る頑張る!!! 500 frames and counting! As suspected, my friends all going home for Thanksgiving meant that I had a lot of free time; I can almost certainly be done by this time tomorrow. You're insane going at that speed. But I guess insanity is what you need in order to reach your goals ![]() Anyway, I want to thank you for this post! This just motivated me to do a few more kanji now. I'm at 550 now, reached 500 a few days ago. I've been trying to get through this book since several years. I started several times already, my best until now was reaching frame 1300. Now I already speak Japanese on a conversational level. However, I ran into trouble learning more advanced words, because I always confuse the kanji! That's my motivation for doing RTK now. It's my first time using this site for it, and this really helps and keeps my going. When I add new kanji, I usually add a lot, like 50 - 100. But I'm somehow too lazy to do that much everday. Sometimes, I always think it's tedious to add new kanji, although it's pretty easy and effective! The reviews are fun for me. Because that's where you can really see how much you've learned with this little effort! ![]() Because I already know some Japanese, I use a slightly different approach to RTK.... I don't only use 1 keyword, but look up every new kanji in the dictionary. I usually add the readings that seem common to me, as well as additional meanings as key. ( In English and German; German is my mother tongue. ). This helps me a lot! I remember the kanji way better than before, because I get a better image of what it actually means and where it occurs. : ) 500 frames, 頑張ります
500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - andrewo91 - 2011-11-24 553 and counting! ROOOOARRRR! 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - Fallacy - 2011-11-30 ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAR!! Just hit 500 kanji this morning! This is my fourth attempt through the book over the course of 2 years and this is the furthest I've gotten. I've been going at a pace of 50 a day for the past 10 days and don't plan to stop. See you at the halfway point. 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - japanese_story - 2011-12-04 OK. I hit 500 frames yesterday! Started with RtK last month and I have been studying around 20 frames a day. I have three weeks off work over Christmas/New Year which I will be spending in Tokyo with my wife's family (so hoping to increase my study over this time). This is also my first post on the forum so thought I'd take a moment to say 'Hi' and introduce myself a little. My Japanese has always been self-study, I completed the Genki Series and have now started RtK to boost my kanji. Happily, it seems to be working! 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - sansa43 - 2011-12-05 Finally hit 500 today after trying twice unsuccessfully. Add 50 cards everyday. 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - walteranderson - 2011-12-07 First attempt at RTK and hit the 500 mark just a few minutes ago. I started on October 28th, so its been a little over a month. I started out really slow doing 5-10 frames per day but I've moved up to 30 per day since then. I feel like it's taken me a million years to get this far though. Hopefully it'll pick up a bit once I get higher up. 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - astendra - 2011-12-07 Good job everyone! これからも頑張ってください
500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - qwertyytrewq - 2011-12-12 I received my RtK Vol.1 book on Wednesday, started reading it on Thursday and at the end of Monday, I'm about 500 through and feeling very good. I expect to be slowing down now as I begin to go past 500 while simultaneously using Anki to properly review the first 500. Hopefully, my retention rate won't be too bad. I am already recognising the Kanji I read in RtK in native Japanese material like websites and books so that is a nice tangible proof that I'm making progress. The short-term results I have received from RtK has been extremely positive which is funny because I was a bit skeptical of RtK's method and delayed the purchase of the book for too long. A year or two ago, I sampled a few pages and two things at the time, turned me off: Why do I need to know what the kanji for Gall Bladder is, and why is the meaning of 光 "ray" and not "light" which is what I always saw it as? The reason I asked myself those questions is because I didn't properly understand what the goal of the book was and why everything in the book was set up the way they are. Before RtK, I experimented in different ways of learning Kanji but most of those methods merely boil down to "look at Kanji, memorise it, memorise both or more readings, memorise English meaning, and then write it down 50 times so you don't forget it." Here's the kicker: When I write down a particular Kanji 50 times to brute force it, I'll forget it the next day. When I write a Kanji from RtK only 3 times, I'll still remember it the next day, and I suspect, forever. I can't tell the future of my memory, but it feels that way at least. The last thing I'd like to say "and no thanks to you" to the anti-Heisig haters, whose opinions influenced me into not buying the book and delaying my learning, and for not providing a non-Heisig alternative to learning Kanji (there isn't any, brute force memorising doesn't count). By the way, I notice this website has an SRS function similar to Anki. Is there any reason why I should use one rather than the other? 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - eubankp - 2011-12-15 ROOOARRR!!! Finished #528 today, going at 40 day. 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - frony0 - 2012-01-02 I just hit #577 last night ^_^ great way to start the new year! Though I might have to slow down due to schoolwork that needs to be done :p (RTK is a constructive way to procrastinate...) がんばれ everyone, see you at 1000!
500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - NoSleepTilFluent - 2012-01-02 Congrats to all the new 500+ members. Take it from me you will progress you will succeed. Everyone around you learning japanese will think you're some Kanji god. Keep going it's definitely worth it in the end. You are awesome and should feel awesome. 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - franciscobc84 - 2012-01-03 Reached #508 today. It has taken me three weeks so far, I think I'm going at quite a steady pace, without making it too overwhelming. I intend to finish the book until the end of February/beginning of March. Let's see if I can make it. 500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - joelaveres - 2012-01-06 Made it to 629 today a bit more than 500 but i just found this thread, i'm seriously loving this book, like, without Heisig and his method I would've given up a loonngg time ago. I find that recording how much kanji i learn per day helps keep me motivated, (as well as the progress bar) i try to make sure i learn more that the day before, even if its just one more. Anyway congratulations to all the others who've hit 500 and keep it up
500 frames and counting! ROOOOARRRR!!! - Grabaka79 - 2012-01-13 707.... 4 kanji a day, because I'm lazy,and I like it!
