After Genki 2? - isaalexa - 2014-03-05 I was just wondering what books would be best after genki 2? I'm about to finish Genki 2 (one lesson left) I don't know where to go from that. I know for sure I don't want to get those 日本語総まとめ books because I've read a lot of reviews that say the material wasn't sufficient for the jlpt levels it taught. I've also read a lot about tobira and have been thinking of getting that, but I'm not sure if it would be too big of a jump? I have been learning some vocab outside of genki, but I don't know if it's enough to move on to tobira. I was also thinking of getting either the dictionary of basic Japanese grammar, or intermediate Japanese grammar, but I'm not sure which one would be best after genki 2. After Genki 2? - Dustin_Calgary - 2014-03-05 Most people I have talked to are very happy with tobira, and most didn't think it was too much of a jump where IAIJ seemed to be a bit more dull, and have more overlap. The Dictionary of Basic/Intermediate grammar books are an indispensable aid imo ^^ ( would, and have gone with both ) After Genki 2? - timaki - 2014-03-05 I went through Japanese for Busy People volumes 1, 2, and half of 3 a few years back, and RTK V1. I just started Tobira, and assuming that Genki 1/2 are not that far off from the JFBP series, I would say you will be ready for Tobira. I've only been using it for a week or two, and it is very challenging, yet not too far out from JFBP. I recommend having someone who is fluent in Japanese available, at least by email, for questions about grammar issues not covered in the core grammar-point discussions. The book is mostly readings and dialogs, and the book does not include full English translations for either, just 単語表. After Genki 2? - Flamerokz - 2014-03-05 I'd echo the general sentiments here and say if textbooks are your thing then Tobira would be a good choice after Genki 2. After Genki 2? - muteki99 - 2014-03-06 Figured I would ask here instead of making my own topic since it is somewhat related: I just picked up the main tobira text book and the grammar exercise book. There is also a kanji book and teacher guide/answer key. I figured I would skip on the kanji book since I have completed RTK, but looking at example pages now it has practice exercises and isn't just a dictionary. Has anyone gone through it and if so how much value do you think it would be to someone who has gone through RTK and has a vocabulary of ~3500(core)? Also, if anyone has the teacher guide, what does it cover? Is it just the main text or does it have the grammar/kanji book content as well? Does it have translations for the dialogues in the main text? Just now flipping through the new book and trying to get organized, thanks!
