HabitRPG Japanese study guild? - amthomas - 2014-02-28 Hey, long time no post. I've been negelecting my RevTK and Kanji in general in the last year or so because I've been working on general vocabulary, and also just enjoying a lot of Japanese culture (import DS games & anime). I'm just getting myself back into the swing of things as far as Japanese study goes, and I was wondering if anyone else is using HabitRPG? I'm using it for daily tasks and health goals, but there's an active anime community with pretty neat challenges. I'm thinking about starting a JLPT or RevTK or just general Japanese study guild, but I don't know if there would be any interest in that. I know this is a super active forum, so maybe there are other people here thinking about the same thing, or wishing someone else would start one? HabitRPG Japanese study guild? - jishera - 2014-02-28 I don't know if I would necessarily want to join a guild, but I didn't know about this habitRPG--looks cool! I may try it out since I've been looking for a way to track my habits. So thanks for the introduction :-). HabitRPG Japanese study guild? - Loviatar - 2014-02-28 I've been using HabitRPG's beta for a while now. I don't have a guild or even now how that would work but I'm listening
HabitRPG Japanese study guild? - amthomas - 2014-02-28 Guilds are basically groups of people that can compete in Challenges together. Sometimes Challenges have rewards, but they don't have to. For example, it's hard to tell who wins in some of the Anime Club Guild challenges because they are things like "Watch 2 episodes of XYZ show" made by someone who likes that show and wants to encourage others to try it out. You'll get experience for completing the TODO items, but there may not be an official winner of the challenge, or a gem-based prize or anything. A RevTK challenge would be something with TODOs like "Learn 0-100 RevTK kanji", or "Learn 0-10 RevTK kanji", "Learn 11-20 RevTK kanji" maybe, with habits like "reviewed 10 kanji from my "One Review" pile, etc. Would that be useful or motivational to anyone other than me? HabitRPG Japanese study guild? - hirata - 2014-02-28 I've been using HabitRPG for a long time now, so I would join up if a guild were created. HabitRPG Japanese study guild? - Bokusenou - 2014-02-28 I would join as well. I finished RTK a long time ago though, so it would be nice to have to dos for different levels. HabitRPG Japanese study guild? - amthomas - 2014-03-03 By "different levels" do you mean levels in RevTK, or in Japanese study, or...? I'd love to hear your ideas for other challenges.
HabitRPG Japanese study guild? - crayonmaster - 2014-03-03 Wow I can't believe this site has been around and I haven't been taking advantage of it! Thanks for the share. As for a Japanese guild/challenge... I finished Rtk long ago, but could probably use a kick in the butt for other study related goals like extensive reading, or conversation practice. HabitRPG Japanese study guild? - andikaze - 2014-03-04 So what's the guild name? I just started today. Thanks for introducing this, I like it
HabitRPG Japanese study guild? - KanjiKami - 2014-03-04 Funny. I just saw this post today, but actually JOINED HabitRPG (found through a post on the Japanese Level Up blog I found recently) on Feb 28--the day this thread was posted. I would be in, but agree that it would be nice to have various challenges, since I'm approaching 1800 frames in RtK. Some thoughts: >I don't know anything about guilds (and relatively little about HabitRPG in general), but I imagine it isn't critical that *all* members be qualified for *all*challenges? In other words, wouldn't it be fine to have challenges such as, "Complete the first 250 frames of RtK" AND "Make it to frame 1500 of RtK," AND "Do XX minutes of sustained reading in Japanese" as simultaneous or rotating challenges? I don't qualify for the first two because I'm well past them, but I could do the third. >Is it possible to have scaled challenges, with different rewards for completion? For example, under "Read for XX minutes today," perhaps there are two levels of rewards--one for those using pop-up dictionaries such as Rikaichan or the Android app Jade Reader* (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zyz.mobile. Sorry, couldn't figure out how to make a link out of the Jade Reader text) and another for those who read without such assistance. Or one for reading manga, one for literature, and one for news (three styles that have their own challenges). Just a couple of thoughts that jumped into my head. *For those interested in Jade Reader, it appears to be only on Android. To get the most out of it, try downloading AozoraProvider (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mizushimanet.AozoraProvider). This app gives you direct access to Aozora. Choose the text you want, then download the text file version and select Jade Reader to open it. It's pretty great. I'm reading the historical fiction 宮本武蔵 by 吉川英治, which I read in English years ago ("Musashi" by Eiji Yoshikawa), and have always wanted to read in Japanese. Now I can! For free! On my phone or tablet! With a pop-up dictionary! PS, if you know of any other ways to get Japanese .txt files onto my phone so I could use them with Jade Reader (especially contemporary texts), I'd love to hear about them. I could happily continue reading Musashi for a looong time (and I will!). It's surprisingly approachable and interesting to boot. But reading contemporary stuff would be nice too. I have several print novels, but can't quite read at a reasonable rate without a dictionary so those have to wait for a while. HabitRPG Japanese study guild? - amthomas - 2014-03-05 Hey, I just realized that a guild called "JRPG" is not about people who play JRPGs, but about people studying Japanese on Habit RPG. I added a JLPT prep challenge to that guild, and will add an RTK one soon. See you on HabitRPG! (and around the forums, now that I'm properly studying again) HabitRPG Japanese study guild? - CureDolly - 2015-04-25 This is an old thread but I thought people might be interested to know that this week it has finally become possible to have the HabitRPG interface in Japanese. This is really a huge improvement for those of us who like to have everything in Japanese! Incidentally, we have an open Japanese-only guild on Habit with an ongoing Shiritori game. Know the person (not irl but a good amount considerng the Internet) who started it up too. He hasn't logged on in a while but I tweeted a screenshot of just how big the guild has gotten since his absence. I'm sure that will get his attn ^_^ @CureDolly: Sorry to bump this but this is great news! All my task I would write in Japanese for writng practice/immersion purposes. Now that there is an option to change to Japanese, that's even more immersion! HabitRPG Japanese study guild? - CureDolly - 2015-06-14 Yes, I was just the same. I wrote all my tasks in Japanese, but of course the framework was in English. Now not only can you have it in Japanese, but a lot of the quest stories are in Japanese too. They aren't exactly great literature but much more fun in Japanese! Actually it is quite a coincidence that you wrote this today because my colleague Cure Yasashiku just today wrote a piece on it and some of the other changes that make the application better for Japanese immersion. HabitRPG Japanese study guild? - RawrPk - 2015-06-16 Read the piece on it just now. I'm glad that besides the option to change the language they added X amount of days for Dailies. I like that the bit about the potato 「じゃがいも」 bit too xD I wish I could write all my tasks in Japanese but since I haven't been actively been studying in the past year, I'm a bit rusty and I don't want to write them incorrectly. When I build more confidence and establish more of a routine I'll get back to it. |
