No, by the end of RTK1 - and certainly by the time you know enough vocab and grammar - you should be able to learn to recognize new kanji without any special effort, and the words you mentioned seem to use RTK1 kanji in any case.

RTK3 has some common kanji that aren't in RTK1, but it also has plenty of kanji that you'll only find in place and people's names. I personally only add RTK3 flashcards when I find a text that uses them, as the site allows you to add them selectively. Too bad you can't do the same with the flashcards that are somewhat common (appear on JLPT lists) but don't appear in RTK3.

You don't actually "need" RTK 1 OR 3 unless you specifically want to write the kanji.

It also lacks some kanji that are actually quite common; I have dozens of non-RTK kanji in my deck that I've encountered multiple times in my (not-so-high-level) reading materials. The RTK3 selection seems a bit random sometimes. I second the advice of adding RTK3/non-RTK kanji selectively based on real-life encounters. I also often use Tangorin to quickly find out whether a given kanji appears in any common or useful-looking words, as an estimate of whether it's worth SRSing.

By the way, for anyone who didn't do 6th edition, supplement >>> RTK3. I've seen 135 of the 157 characters, and many (maybe even most) of them are quite common.

The purpose of RTK 1 is not only to teach you a set of kanji but also to teach you how to learn new kanji. If you do RTK 1 and still can't learn kanji by yourself, you've missed part of the point.

Newspapers are a pretty specific area of Japanese; they tend to limit themselves to the Joyo List so RTK 1 is fine. I never read Japanese newspapers so I'm not entirely sure how accurate that is.

EDIT: Incidentally, the idea of newspapers being a goal that all learners should strive for is obsolete. Unless you're actually interested in reading news in Japanese, I wouldn't bother.

After you've got 2,200 kanji under your belt new kanji are very easy to spot and remember. I saw the kanji for インコ / parrot / 鸚哥 once, like a week ago, having never seen them or touched RTK3 in my life, and I can still produce it. This skill only gets stronger with time. RTK3 is nice if you really enjoyed learning and writing kanji as an end in itself, but as for usefulness it's best to study what you find when you find it.

You are somewhat right, you don’t need RTK to learn to read the kanji. But RTK teaches you couple of other things beyond the ability to write.

As yudan put it, you learn how to construct mnemonics for the yet unknown characters (this should happen by the time you reach “Part three: Elements”).

The other thing is that RTK greatly facilitates process of familiarising yourself with this alien writing system.

i have no problem to pick up a new kanji unless there are new primitives/radicals that are not covered in RTK 1

1) Its never necessary to do RTK either 1 or 3
2) Newspapers won't go beyond Joyo characters so RTK is sufficient anyway
3) Just because a word is rare doesn't mean the characters are complicated :

hazwanium Wrote:since the news contain words like anti aircraft missile and aircraft carrier etc, i wonder if it is necessary to do RTK 3
Anti Aircraft Missile : 対空ミサイル
Aircraft carrier : 航空母艦

No rare or difficult characters there.
